SINGAPORE - Transport operator SBS Transit will continue running the 17 bus routes under the Bukit Merah bus package but has lost the 26 routes under the Jurong West package to SMRT Buses.

The new five-year contracts for the two packages will start progressively from the second quarter of 2024.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced the results of the tender for the two bus packages on Friday evening, nearly nine months after it was called in late November 2022.

The 17 bus routes in the Bukit Merah package serve Bukit Merah town and the Central Business District, and include two cross-border services to Johor Bahru. The buses use the Ulu Pandan Bus Depot.

SBS Transit will continue managing the Bukit Merah and HarbourFront bus interchanges under the new contract, which will start immediately after the current one expires in April 2024. It first won the contract through a tender in 2018.

The Jurong West bus package comprises 26 routes covering Jurong, Boon Lay and Tuas. They operate from the Soon Lee Bus Depot in the Jurong industrial estate.

In addition to the buses, services and depot, SMRT Buses will take over the Joo Koon and Boon Lay bus interchanges. It will start operating the package in September 2024.

SBS transit always retains the bt merah bus package, it is because they run the cross-border services to Johor Bahru? If change bus operator, very troublesome to re-train bus captains and change buses, since buses running to JB needs to 'specially' registered.

Anyway, any bus operator i also ok except SBS transit. 😅

Driver in the lost package will likely go to new operator.

How does cross border service correlate to Bkt Merah Package?

Maybe it might be problem if change bus operator to run cross border service since there are some requirements for the bus operator to follow. You see SBS transit already retains the bt merah package previously and the latest package.

Both SMRT and SBS operate cross border services.

What's the difference? We take bus becoz of the route, not the bus company

Got some difference which bus company run the route. The quality and the type of bus is difference. 😂 Overall sbs transit bus is older and more single decker.

Even buses belong to LTA now, but these buses esp the older buses still purchased under the bus company back then. And they are still using these buses. And notice the newer bus company mostly are using newer buses bought under LTA. This is why i said I don’t like sbs transit since their buses many are old bus.

Does it matter to me? What matters to me most is if I have options. If I dun, what’s the point of this announcement unless I have vested interest as an investor.
