You are exactly right.

Face-saving gesture for both sides.

:D

Haha, a face-saving gesture for both sides as intention was there when they spoke to these few potentials; silverware and 'egg-shaped' good looks notwithstanding. Objectively, to 'achieve' 8th position in the entire season is no doubt an under-performance vs a one-off job-saving Cup match for an appropriate comparison.

Ok lah, I recall Alex Ferguson was also in the same situation few decades back, almost kena sack but then turn around after FA cup win.

Yes, Mark Robin's goal against Forest (1-0) in the '90 FA Cup saved SAF after 3 seasons without silverware but main thing is that he improved MU's placing from 13th to 6th that season. Compared to Moyes who got sacked after the '13-14 season even when MU was placed 7th, hence a deterioration of standards and under-performance (including Rashford), for an appropriate comparison. Also signings from his old-boys network (including Antony) will be curtailed as transfers will be under the Chief Scout and Sporting director.

ManU 3 (De Ligt / Rashford / Ganarcho) - Southampton 0 (EPL - Away)

The defence comprising De Ligt, Mazraoui, Martinez and Dalot were in shambles and the miscommunication betweeen Martinez and Dalot, more so when they both left the ball for each other but left it to an open attack, especially when when Dalot gave away a penalty in the 31st minute, but fortunate that Onana saved it well, even on the rebound after parrying it. Eriksen's short corner to Bruno found De Ligt at the far corner to head the ball in for us to take the lead in the 35th minute, followed by Rashford's goal in the 41st minute that would have broken Southampton's resolve after those two quick-fire goals.

The midfield duo of Mainoo and Eriksen performed much better in the second half, controlling and pining Southampton in their own half and  pumping balls to Zirkzee, Amad, Bruno and the more energetic Rashford, whose new-found confidence prompted him to try a long-range shot that hit the crossbar from outside the boxfor a corner. A quad of subsititutions with Rashford, Mazraoui and Eriksen for Ganarcho, Maguire and Manuel Ugarte, making his debut in the 73rd minute, followed by Evans for the injured Martinez. A red-card was shown to Southampton's defender Stephens for a stud-high knee challenge on Ganarcho in the 79th minute. The injured De Ligt had a suspected hamstring injury and was replaced by Casemiro in the 86th minute, who played a part in Ganarcho's goal at the end of regulation time. A huge sigh of relief for ETH.

Ya, up to that point Southampton were on the front-foot, till that penalty save by Onana which broke their resolve and affected their play in the second half.

ManU 7 (Rashford x2 / Antony -pen / Ganarcho x2 / Eriksen x2) - Barnsley 0 (League Cup - Home)

As with most matches between a Premier League versus a League 1 club, it was easy pickings for us to dominate and go 3-0 up in the first half, with Zirkzee, Bruno, Mainoo, Amad, Martinez, De Ligt on the bench with Onana rested for this match.

It was Ganarcho again who scored early in the second half for 4-0, followed by another goal from Rashford in the 58th minute and was replaced by Zirkzee, with Bruno for Ugarte and Mazraoui for Dalot. It was gametime for De ligt and Amad who replaced Evans and Ganarcho after Eriksen's two goals. Next EPL match against Crystal Palace on Sunday at 12.30am.

ManU 0 - Crystal Palace 0 (EPL - Away)

With Rashford on the bench, it was Zirkzee in front with Ganarcho, Bruno and Amad in support. The mid was helmed by Ericken and Mainoo, with Dalot, Martinez, Mazraoui and De Ligt in defence and Onana in goal. A good start with precise passing, high-pressing, possession at 70% and great chances from Ganarcho, De Ligt, Bruno and Zirkzee, mainly from Dalot and Eriksen's spraying effective passes from the left and the many corner kicks awarded from dominating the match. Nothing to show for the chances gone abegging, with the 0-0 score at half time.

A change for the ineffective Zirkzee for Rashford in the 61st minute followed by Amad and Eriksen making way for Ugarte and Hojlund in the 76th minute to make the required clinical finishes. It was 2 goals lost for ETH for what was a dominating and best yet display to overturn the 4-0 thrashing from Palace last season.

ManU 1 (Eriksen) - Twente 1 (Europa League - Home)

It was Zirkzee in front, supported by Rashford, Bruno and Amad with Ugarte and Eriksen in midfield. The defence consisted of Mazraoui, Maguire, Martinez and Dalot. With more of possession and chances, it paid off when Eriksen scored in the 34th minute to take the lead in the first half.

The first substitution came in the 67th minute but Twente levelled the score a minute later when Eriksen was dispossessed in front of our goal. A triple substitution was made to stem the tide and it was Eriksen, Rashford and Zirkzee making way for Mainoo, Mount and Hojlund for the win but it was again poor finishing that let us down.

With Mazraoui and Ugarte settling well into the team, the concern is that Zirkzee does not fit well till now, playing out of position and not able to read the moves and the passes of and from, his team mates.

ManU 0 - Tottenham Hotspur 3 (EPL - Home)

Not a good start as Spurs scored early in the 2nd minute after Rashford mis-timed his pass to Ganarcho and the unmarked Brennan Johnson scored an easy goal off the right post. The high-line employed by Spurs paid dividends as they had plenty of fire power everytime they pressed forward with Brennan hitting the bottom post after beating Onana. The main culprit was Dalot with his poor passing and giving the ball away many times in our 18 yard box and then getting booked in the 39th minute. A red card for Bruno for a high-studded tackle in the 42nd minute made the job all the more difficult to at least level the score, moreso with the injured Mainoo replaced by Mason Mount before the end of the first half.

With desperate measures for desperate times, it was Casemiro coming on for the ineffective Zirkzee to prevent the midfield being overun and adopt a more defensive posture. It was again Spurs who scored early in the 2nd minute against our 10 men, and to augment the much better performance in this half, ETH replaced Ugarte and Rashford with Eriksen and Hojlund in the 73rd minute and Spurs put the game to bed when they scored off a corner, in stark contrast to the inability to capitalise from the many set pieces that we were awarded. As with Liverpool, it was another 3-0 drubbing and apart from Bruno's sending-off, ETH has a lot to answer for the poor start this season!

Man u got outplayed even with 11 man

I think that's it with tenhag. He is already on extra time at man u. The cup win give him chances to try this season.

But he cannot get his key players to work at all.

ManU 3 (Rashford / Hojlund / Maguire) - Porto 3 (Europa League - Away)

The trio of Rashford, Bruno and Amad supported Hojlund in front whilst Casemiro and Eriksen helmed the midfield with Mazraoui, De Ligt, Martinex and Dalot brought up the rear. A good start when Rashford scored early in the 7th minute from Eriksen's pass and another goal by Hojlund in the 20th minute. A mistake by Mazraoui who headed the ball towards our own goal which Onana parried but could not stop the rebound allowed Porto to reduce the deficit in the 27th minute. The lead was erased when Porto scored again in the 34th minute when De Ligt was slow to react from the resulting header.

When Rashford was replaced by Ganarcho in the second half, it did not go down well with our supporters as he was instrumental with the many attacking moves cutting in from the left and ETH had another setback as it was again De Ligt who allowed Porto's forward Samu to get in from behind to score in the 50th minute. A double substitution in the 68th minute by Antony and Zirkzee for Amad and Hojlund and later by Evans and Maguire for the injured Martinez and the ineffective De Ligt was insufficient to stem the pressure from Porto. A red card again for Bruno for a high leg challenge that connected with a Porto defender's head instead of the ball, seemed to be an unlearnt lesson and unbecoming of a captain as it was a consecutive incident from the previous match against Spurs. A header by Maguire in the last minute of the added extra five minutes to level the score saved ETH the blushes and an iminent sack.

ManU 0 - Aston Villa 0 (EPL - Away)

With the error-prone De Ligt making way for the in-form Maguire with Mazraoui, Evans and Dalot making up the defence, it was Hojlund supported by Rashford, Bruno and Ganarcho. The midfield consisted of Eriksen and Mainoo who were yellow-carded together with Maguire in the scoreless first half, but both sides were even in terms of attack and possession although Villa had more of the chances, no thanks to the free-kicks given away in our 18 yard box by Evans, Ganarcho and Maguire, who looked like he tore a muscle and would have to be replaced for the second half.

A double replacement for Maguire and Mazraoui by De Ligt and Lindelof and later with Zirkzee and Antony for Hojlund and Rashford, who committed another rash and nasty foul even after he received a yellow card earlier. Another substitution for Mainoo by Casemiro in the 85th minute for strengthen the mid for incisive passes to the forwards were in vain as both teams were lack-lustre in performance and a draw was a fair result. With another draw and a measly 5 goals to show for after seven matches, ETH's days at MU looks numbered.
