[Update 2: Collapsed Structure Incident Along Bernam Street]

Following an intensive search operation, a worker who was earlier reported missing, was sighted to be pinned under the collapsed reinforced concrete structure around 1800hrs. The worker had no pulse and breathing.

The SCDF immediately conducted cutting and breaking operations to free the casualty. The operation also required the Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (DART) personnel to dig their way through the rubble to create space and assess where parts of the body may have been trapped. This was further complicated due to the weight of the concrete slab which was in excess of 50 tonnes (estimated) as well as mangled scaffolding around the body.

The casualty was finally freed after nearly four hours around 2145hrs. He was pronounced dead at the scene by a paramedic.

Earlier in the search operation, CCTV footages from the surrounding buildings were obtained by the Police to assist in the assessment of the situation. A fibre optic scope, life detection equipment and search canines were also deployed to detect for signs of life.  The operation involved the coordinated use of heavy machinery from the construction site as well as rescue equipment to cut and lift the reinforced concrete slab.

11 SCDF emergency vehicles and about 70 personnel, including rescuers from the DART were deployed at the scene for this operation.

Very sad. Many are totally not familiar or have never been to a large scale construction site in their life. Today's construction is about number of workers but are number the solution? Any study done to compare developed world construction and ours, not talking about all the 'innovations stuff' but number of workers deployed.

They were probably just being factual instead of just saying person is dead.

Unlikely a human error (commit by the construction workers) for the collapse of a 10m x 3.8m wall. More possibly something to do with the assessment, work methodology, and control measures installed. Reminds me of the PIE viaduct collapse in 2017.

It is lucky that it occurred on level 2 instead of on higher floor, else the impact of falling concrete wall and fragments could have killed / injured many more, including passer-by.

While the skills, competency and level of safety awareness among the workers are important, the most critical part for such works of engineering construction is with the design and calculations, as well as proper work instructions (sequence of work, demarcation, assessment, etc.).

I can feel for the family of the 20 year old decease. RIP young boy.

Poor worker, whenever these kind of incident happen, it is workers that suffer. The Lao Ban probably pushing away as much as possible. See liao also a bit du lan, when it comes to safety officer's email. I always make sure I read it well and protect my people.

Very true. The fact that an open top lorry can ferry 20 workmen without seat belt and we call ourselves developed country. Many areas we are lacking.
