But sometime We think back,if MM Lee Kuan Yew never got "pressure" from Dr M in the 80's,Singapore may not be so successful now, because at that time Dr M look down on Singapore,so MM Lee worked very hard..to gain Fame around the World.

Many capabilities that SG has now, is due to the "push" from the north threatening to cut this and that. If they were benign, benevolent neighbour, always willing to support, supply and cooperate, perhaps we wouldn't have developed so much and would have become dependent on them.

Malaysia never think long-term. Only take piecemeal knee jerk action to wayang to their indigenous audience. The latest piecemeal action to cut supply of fresh chicken is a good example, hurt themselves more in the longer term.

Mahathir files US$33.8 million defamation suit against Malaysian PM Anwar over wealth claims

KUALA LUMPUR: Dr Mahathir Mohamad has filed a RM150 million (US$33.8 million) defamation lawsuit against Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim after the latter allegedly accused him of enriching himself while in power and calling him a racist.

In the statement of claim, the former prime minister said that Mr Anwar’s claims during his speech at a Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) congress in March were untrue and intended to damage his reputation and image.

Dr Mahathir said that Mr Anwar’s statements had tarnished his image as a statesman who was also twice a former prime minister and one that has a reputation as a respected leader throughout Malaysia and the world.

Dr Mahathir, 97, is seeking RM50 million in general damages and another RM100 million in exemplary damages.

The lawsuit was filed at the Shah Alam High Court on Wednesday (May 3).

In March, Mr Anwar is believed to have criticised certain former leaders of the country during a PKR special national congress held in Shah Alam.

Without mentioning any names, Mr Anwar at the political event alluded that a former leader - in his two stints as prime minister for “22 years and (another) 22 months” - had used his position to enrich himself, his family and his children.

Dr Mahathir was Malaysia’s prime minister from July 1981 to October 2003 and again from May 2018 to February 2020.

In his speech, Mr Anwar said that the leader only complained about Malays losing their dominance in the country after he was no longer in power.

In the statement of claim, Dr Mahathir said that as prime minister, Mr Anwar’s statement would get more media attention in and out of the country.

He also wanted Mr Anwar to retract all the alleged defamatory statements made against him and to apologise for the remarks.

Dr Mahathir had said on Mar 28 that Anwar had seven days to retract his statements.

Is he going to live that long to see out this lawsuit?

I think he should come to realize his time is up. No matter what he mess with, he's probably not gonna live long enough to see through it.

Enjoy whatever he has. Time to step down and enjoy whatever years that he has left and not mess with politics anymore.

Not exactly new but a reminder on who screwed many of CLOB investors, Diam and his cronies who got filthy rich from the saga.

THE CLOB AFFAIR

Government official close to the situation told CNA that of particular interest are the corporate transactions that were widely seen as forced divestments by businessmen caught on the wrong side of the political divide and the closure in September 1998 of the so-called Central Limit Order Book, or CLOB, an informal trading platform that offered investors the trading in the stocks of a large selection of Malaysian listed companies in the Singapore bourse.

Singapore set up CLOB in 1990 after Kuala Lumpur banned the trading of stocks in Malaysian companies on the Singapore exchange.

Malaysia grudgingly tolerated the CLOB platform because stockbrokers based in Singapore took some of the load from their overburdened Malaysia counterparts who could not cope with the deluge of business as the Kuala Lumpur stock exchange exploded during the boom years of the 1990s.

Then came the regional financial crisis and the political maelstrom with the open warfare between former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his then-deputy and current premier Anwar Ibrahim.

Sharp differences between the two politicians on how to respond to the financial crisis morphed into a bitter political clash that resulted in Mr Anwar's sacking from government and imprisonment on corruption and sexual misconduct charges.

In September 1998, just days before Mr Anwar was sacked from government, Malaysia imposed capital controls, set the local currency at a fixed rate of 3.80 ringgit against the US dollar, and banned the trading of Malaysian stocks outside the country.

The move effectively froze billions of dollars worth of stock in 112 Malaysian companies that were trading on CLOB.

Mr Daim, who was brought back to the government following Mr Anwar’s sacking and reappointed at finance portfolio, quickly approved a controversial plan by a close associate, Singapore businessman Akhbar Khan, to operate a lucrative concession to manage the return of the frozen equities, which at the time was valued at roughly US$4 billion.

CORPORATE SHAKEDOWN

The CLOB affair, which came under heavy public criticism, strained Malaysia’s bilateral relations with Singapore and coincided with one of the most extensive purges in corporate Malaysia, where business and politics have long intertwined.

Business personalities and groups linked to the deposed Mr Anwar were forced to pare down their controlling stakes in their companies in favour of parties linked to Dr Mahathir and Mr Daim, who at the time was both finance minister and also treasurer of the then-ruling UMNO party.

Where will Tun M be in five years’ time?

He is the walking dead living on borrowed time. Putting him in prison will be meaningless. Prison time is more effective on the younger ppl like his sons. He will sit there and watch them go to prison for corruption. His sons will pay for what he did in the past. The sons arent politicians neither nor they wield any influence or power. Hence cannot use the royal pardon card to save them from serving long prison terms. He will be in a sad place in 5 years time.
