It's really all about expectations vis-a-vis the price you paid. I paid close to $4k and spent 3 weeks downtime, hence I believe I should expect better outcome.

To add, the WS also did not bother to polish away the swirl marks left after compounding work on the fresh clear coat. Not sure if this is common practice.

Paint shop’s polishing is not refined. So you still need to get it detailed elsewhere.

Swirl marks seem to be the norm.

Wait, $4k?

I was quoted < $2k for a G30.

my wife smashed the rear bumper of her previous car when it was a few months old

dealer replaced the bumper, resprayed the new bumper with new paint

the colour stays matched until we trade in the car 10 years later

at 6th year, I replaced one of the rear lights because it got smashed up by a private ambulance

I expect the new light will look different in terms of colour, glossiness and brightness, comparing to the 6 year old light of the other side

no, I can't tell the difference and they stay that way till year 10

Yea, interior+exterior full strip. Special colour plus upgrade to hard solid clear coat. And at the end of it, no invoice too.

To be fair, when the detailer was performing the prep work for the coating, they said the clear coat is good stuff.

amongst the replies in this thread, some can see the difference some cannot

I believe the painter is awared of the difference in tone but trying their luck hoping that you belongs to the group that "cannot see"

they are the professional, no way they didn't spot it

For sure. All workshops always try the convince, confuse and then outright con if they can.

Did TS spray his bonnet at one WS

and his bumper at another WS?

If TS happy his bonnet match the rest of his car

how come he didn't go back to same WS?

:D

The shade difference is more prominent under artificial light.

the saving grace is that it is a dark colour. Light colour will be more obvious even under natural light.

I do think you may have to manage your expectations... My 2c

This is something I would be able to accept and I'm sure many of us here probably will too.

This isn't exactly the newest 5 series and I would think your previously coat would have looked different from factory so even if the workshop used the correct coat and same paint, it will still be a slight different shade since it's new. Plus the fact that the bumper is made usually using a different material.

Like many said, if want a more even colour, maybe respray whole car but even then, the bumper may look a little different due to different material.

Some cars already look like they have different shades when they are out new from factory..

You may still consider going to another professional workshop and see if they can promise you the same shade.. if they can, at least you'll have something to bargain with the previous workshop.

The paint job looks fine.  i think it is good for OP to get his eyes checked.  In life, there are always people who can never be pleased no matter how well things are done.

Yes, it’s the F10 and not G30.

I think the bonnet not being the original factory paint may pose additional challenge for the bumper to match it now.

I have surveyed the cars in my vicinity and found that at least about half have bumpers of different shade than the body. Some are very obvious, including a Jaguar XE.

but as I mentioned before, photos taken under natural light vs under artificial light showed quite a difference in shade, with the bumper being darker. How much more darker? I can’t quantify, probably  1 to 2 shades. Visible enough for some people under artificial light. It reminds me of the movie “50 shades of grey”…haha! But one workshop pointed out that the metal flakes in the bumper appear more concentrated than those in the bonnet. I am not sure if there is any option to vary the amount of metal flakes.

I think the clear coat also plays a part in making colours look darker or lighter.

I read somewhere that there are simply too many variables at play.

You are absolutely right that checking with other expert workshops is a good gauge of whether the task is feasible. One workshop preferred to paint the whole front, that’s of course is a safe bet, but I feel that if a part ain’t broken, don’t fix it. Having said that, you might be right that the bumper will still come out a bit different due to the material.

I will bring it to PML to get their opinion and gauge their confidence level.

if none dares to confidently match it, then I will be more persuaded to lower my expectation.

Thanks for your comment.

I don’t think I am exceptionally demanding. Even the workshop has agreed to redo it. If the match is so good, I don’t think they will offer that.

but how much closer can they get, that’s another question.

There are many similar discussions in overseas forums, so it seems that this is a universal issue. Some workshops can get it right, some can’t. So it’s as much a science as an art.

Bring to PML? What for? They won’t know any better. What do you want to hear anyway. I can say it for them :”it’s like that one !”😂

A lot of car agents sub contract their panel beating and respray out. Very few have it in house. A lot of the in house also cannot make it.

Well, I did call to check out first and they have an in-house workshop. The service advisor whom I spoke with sounded confident, but he is not a repair guy, so I took his words with a pinch of salt. I will just visit for a quick check and go for lunch nearby. Hear what their repair guys say.

but I guess you are bmw owner too. Some of the mechanics are really hopeless. Last time I asked them to check a possible oil leak and they went ahead to change the engine oil despite knowing there was an oil leak. I sent my car elsewhere to fix and after that it was all good. I asked PML to reimburse me the engine oil change.
