Kxbc Turbocharged February 19, 2023 Share February 19, 2023 Besides some of the other reasons that are already highlighted in this thread why we are not as cashless as say China, especially for the older folk, there is 1 glaring thing we miss out. And that is being literate in English. All our payment apps are in English. And probably all the government apps like health buddy as well. There are many old folks who are either illiterate in all languages or just can't read English. If you don't understand what those words are, will you use the app? It's like asking us to use an app with a Hindi interface. The ex nmp contests that even the old in China uses apps for cashless payments. He missed this totally. Their apps are all in Chinese. The chances of them being literate in Chinese is a lot higher.

The critical difference is a lot of them take care of grandchildren. Grandchildren help them to use these apps. In addition, practically everywhere uses cashless. It is a matter of survival. Here, as long as got cash, will not die. No need learn also never mind. Lastly and most importantly, face. Don’t know how to use cashless sure lose face in China. 4

Key in the dollar value and exclude the reference. It’s really a fool proof few steps.
Tohto Hypersonic February 19, 2023 Share February 19, 2023 I am still using cash payment 90% of the time for food at hawker. I support using cash. I am still old fashion type. Prepared some cash every month for food, that will be my normal food spending for the month. Using apps will felt easy to over spend.

I have been to China in 2019 where it is very difficult to use cash as a tourist. Coming back I decided to try to use more cash to keep it relevant here as I think fully cashless is not to common citizens advantage, only govt and big corp 5

I think there will be very few who are truly and fully illiterate in China if they are more than 7 decades old. They would definitely know the basic and that might be sufficient to be more confident.

Two are supposed to be educated till our equivalent of A levels (but in Chinese only) and one is blue collar all the way and at best educated in Chinese till Pri 6. When computers started to creep into our world, they were already very close to retirement age or either that, do not have to deal with them in their work or daily lives. Computers and tech do not resonate with them. Therefore, the process of understanding how procedures work in a computer (and now a smartphone and its app) does not resonate. Add on being illiterate in English, it makes it worse. And of course, the brain starts to deteriorate and learning becomes harder. We cannot discount these factors. Most of us here are literate, probably between late 40s to early 60s, and educated, with one exception of the Grim Reaper who says he is, but till Pri 3 only. 🙂 We learnt the use of computers in school or while at work. To us, it has already become 2nd nature. But not to those who do not have much in contact with computers. I tore my hair trying to teach them to learn how to use a smartphone just for daily functions. Fxxking tedious. They will learn (though very very slowly) if it meets their needs eg whatsapp. But if not, then no interest, even if everything is supposed to be just a few clicks on icons. 4

I know of retired doctor that does not require these technology to go about his daily life to enjoy his retirement. So it is all about what suit you and whether it is needs or not. Embracing the new things help to delay dementia lah. 😆 ↡ Advertisement
