Even digital can go wrong.

Previously a customer overpaid for noodles. The trouble of doing the refund.

Now CDC also can have error.

Quote

Her groceries were $44.26, but she paid $124.26 for them.

A Giant supermarket customer tried to pay with her Community Development Council (CDC) vouchers but ended up paying three times for her groceries.

DFI Retail Group, which owns Giant, told Stomp that it was due to a "minor technical issue" and the customer has since been refunded.

Definitely.

It allows hawkers to concentrate on the food rather than managing the money

Disagree.

Cash money is easy to handle for a sole propietor. They dont need to care about accounts hygiene.
Tthey just need cash flow to pay their suppliers.

if u are talking about someone who's managing a foodcourt, yes digital is easier. Cos they can just take their cut/rental from the digital account.

The thing is why is this person discriminating hawkers for using physical cash? And instead of coming up with a solution to help the hawkers he is shaming them to no end. His total lack of empathy for others is disgusting.

With digital money, store owner don't have to give change back to customers.

That's 1 of the most waste time process that will hog up the line.

Especially solo hawker.

Here's some reasons why you won't take cashless payment, from my experience as Gojek driver:

1, Rider 1 book cash trip, but says he has no cash at drop off. He ask if I take paynow ? I said yes, so wait for a few minutes while he "transfer". In the meantime, another trip has gone off, waiting for me, while I'm waiting for him. After 5 min, he says ok transferred. I check my gmail and no transaction has come in, no message. I let him off, thinking at the same time, the bank was doing some maintenance, maybe that's why it's late. After I finished my shift, after more than 6 hrs of nothing, I realized I was duped. I tried Gojek CS, they call him, but no answers (obviously, to find out why later). CS ask me to file police report as they can't do anything else. So meaning, he can go around cheating others. I feel for $15, it will take me more than an hour to stop work, file police report, report to Gojek, a lot of time wasted. So maybe not worth the trouble. I lost $15.

2. Rider 2 book cash trip. 3 teenage guys jump in. Same thing, no cash at the time, ask me about paynow. At the end of the trip, they passed to me a caller. He told me, he book for them. Let them go, while his dad is in the shower. He will pay me after 2 mins. Again, waiting, nothing happen, my next trips were going off. So I had to leave empty. Called Gojek and the same routine goes, but this time I make a police report, and Gojek paid me. But you see, I wasted a lot of time, when I could be making money.

So I resolve to no longer accept cash trips from Gojek, all cancelled.

Cashless payment (like paynow) - my ass.. unless you got lots of time, to ensure you get paid..or scammers will try to cheat you. Do you have that time to chase up ?

Scammers may show you a screen capture of other transaction. You are old, your eyes are weary and blurred, you think you got paid ?

Cash is king, it was yesterday, it is today and it will still be tomorrow.

So understand why some hawkers won't go for cashless payment. Unless you see cash in hand, you might go empty-handed.

Incidentally, for private-hire trips, most are charged by Gojek, Grab on credit card. I get  paid by them, I don't have to deal with riders. If they try to cheat Gojek/Grab, it's not my problem.

For my case, it's a little twist. I had a reliable digital paymaster, and unreliable riders choosing cash trip.

OK true. But depends on what POS system u use. You still need to input sales and type of payment into the system for the food courts/hawker Centers. That takes time also.

For hawkers, no POS system is required.

I paid for my wife's handphone via paynow yesterday.

Took 5-8 mins for the person to verify. Of which I just stood at the counter.

This is not the first time I've bought from this shop. Last time also had same issue.

Maybe cos my paynow is uob and they use a different bank?

I dunno. But this shop has happened twice already. It's not a small amount so I'm OK to wait around for them. Both times i waited at least five mins. But they only accept cash or paynow without penalty.

I did a few trips previously on Grab Hitch.

I only accept non-cash rides as I don't want to waste time waiting for payment.

What you encounter is human nature rather than the tool.

when I sell things at carousell, I insist on cash payment. If buyer say he only paynow, then I don't sell.

I don't want an issue where when we meet, he show me he has transferred via paynow, but I somehow didn't receive. Then what, we stare at each other and wait?

With cash, the buyer can just pay,  collect and off we go our separate ways without wasting time.

It depends on the business you're doing. A handphone shop doesn't do mass sales and transactions, like hawkers. So they got the "luxury" of time. They can afford to wait a little longer in a controlled environment, in their shop.

But paynow should be near instant transaction, even amongst different banks.  But who knows? some cock-up may ensue, one or more bank had some difficulty during that time. It's not 100% full proof. A computer server could be down, a communications network path could be down. Many paths for a failure. They are supposed to have redundancy, but again it's never 100%.

Hmm. I think he's highlighting that the tool can be abused.

Some places don't accept cash or sometimes no bank cards (debit/credit) too.  No Alipay/Wechat pay, no food! [sweatdrop]
