I am just ahead of you on the curve. Went from Japanese to Merc W212. It has been utterly reliable compared with the Japs for the last 7+ years. Only changed wear and tear parts which costs no more than average Jap equivalent. Great fuel consumption for the size using RON95. The insurance is so reasonable compared to what I was paying for Subaru LGT. The drive is as good or better than  the 5-speed Accord 2.4 full-spec (the model with twin screens at the centre console and anti-noise)

i have the 2.0L version which was the older engine. yours was the new engine.

Haha i see quite a number of mercs in my estate. It's either B&B retiree car (lot of honda civics) or the older mercs or lexus.

For some people, a car is purely pt A to pt B purpose. Driving any car is similar to them. A super light steering their feel shiok.

But for those enjoy driving, a super light steering is No No. How the steering feel is important, how a car go through a corner, how a car ride on bumpy road etc...

Expand

Yes for simply point A to B, car is just like an appliance no different from a hair dryer. Cheap & reliable is all they ask for. They'll love Jap and Korean rides.

True story - a close friend of mine who is a millionaire in his mid 30s changed from a brand new BMW 2 series to a 1.3L Honda Fit within a year. Reason is beause he does not appreciate the 2 series and feels that a Fit is just as good, but at half the depre of his BMW. Yes, and he paid for his Fit in full cash.

Glad that you had enjoyed your W212 and willing to spend money to enjoy.

Different strokes for different folks as I say, whatever that makes them happy with their hard earned money even if it means buying a used souped up Golf…as long as they do it with their eyes open.

Other than the W212 series, any other contis have better than average reliability?

Cos in 2025 i will get resale (given the current COE climate unless it drops to below 50k), then i need a 6-7 year old car at that juncture. By then the W212 also would be COE car already by then.

My personal view is that Merc are generally the lesser of evils. Go Lexus if u want a premium marque + reliability.

i concur. get the mass market type of mercs. C or E. plently of parts available at local stockist. get the rarer models and you can be stuck waiting for parts.

If you mean the 1 or 2 series, yes. I think they are generally fine as well.

I used to drive a F20 till it is 5 years old and 100K KM on the odo. Other than encountering an ABS sensor issue, which is a minor and quick fix, it has been a problem free ride. I have 3 other friends driving the 2 series grand and active tourer. No problems reported after 2-3 years of drive.

No VW here. Closest is the Audi.
but bmw and Land Rover get top prize! 😂.

only one japanese and likely it is due to the lousy 2.2 diesel which we don’t get here.

the carwow lists usually feature mostly premium vehicles. kinda hard to see what B&B car reliability is like.
