Thanks pal for pointing out, you are absolutely right about the Applause being a notchback, which is the same as the current Opel Insignia, Skoda Octavia, Superb and Seat Toledo. You are the real car guru [thumbsup] unlike me who is just a google guy [:p]

my father owned a Ford Telstar TX5 last time, this car also considered a notchback?

I believe that's a Mazda 626 in disguise.

I spoke to a young guy driving this at a car park

he said no power and high fuel consumption

I think this is a good choice for young driver except the price is a little steep

High fc is a killer.

In layman's term, a notchback is a 3 box design car with a lift back, so the Telstar and 626 can be considered a notchback. Another few example I can think off are:

Renault Safrane

Citroën Xantia

Toyota Corona Liftback

One of my contractors has one back in 2006 / 2007 and the ride is quite good as compared to the other sport sedans during that time.

Actually i used the word "natchback' deliberately and it was not a spelling error. The UK motoring publications I grew up with coined this term. i tried Googling but can't find this term anymore.

Traditionally, there are the 2-box hatchbacks with an opening rear 5th door, and then there were the 3-box notchbacks (sedans, saloons). When cars like the 1981 Ford Escort came along with a short "boot" that could be opened, something like a 2.5-box, they called these kind of cars "Natchback", like a cross between a Hatchback and a Notchback.

In practice, it offers the elegance of a saloon but the practicality of a hatchback. Of course later more of these shapes came along and they were called liftbacks, fastbacks etc.

Just for sharing 😊
