It's still hachiroku

I am curious, how can one differentiate Hachiroku from Hachigo without opening up the bonnet, given that any AE85 can be transformed into AE86 aesthetically?

Not just in Singapore. Evo / Lancer, VR4 / Galant, FTO, GTO, Eclipse, etc. are long gone in Mitsubishi lineup. In Japan, the are left with a few SUVs (no Pajero though), a MPV (in 2 variants) and a couple of Kei cars (mostly badge engineered Nissan), almost like Perodua of Malaysia.

Honda is moving towards that direction if US mkt is gone.

Mit at least still sell loads of Triton.

Honda doesn’t have pickup.

This is not the AE86 many are familiar with. During that era, many Japanese firms like to market the same product (with minor cosmetics tweak) using different names. I used to work in the R&D department for a Japanese chemical manufacturer, and the formula I developed was sold in Japan, Korea, Australia & Singapore under 3 different product name / code.

OK back to Toyota, the one you posted should be the Corolla Levin GT (2 door)

 toyota_corolla_levin_gt-apex_2-door_25_0

toyota_corolla_levin_gt-apex_2-door_9.jp

which was also marketed as Sprinter Trueno (2 door) with a popping headlight.

toyota_sprinter_trueno_gt-apex_2-door.jp

The 3 door variant (liftback) was marketed as Corolla Levin 3 Door and Sprinter Trueno.

If that is not confusing enough, Toyota also name the model as Corolla Sport Coupe / Corolla GT (2 door) and Corolla Liftback Coupé (3 door) when selling them in different countries / region.

OK, end of lesson. Time to sleep...

S-Class rim buay pai liao, some has E-Class rim even. :D

The drive is quite engaging and the MR setup (mid-rear engine + rear wheel drive) make the car feel more spacious than the other Kei car, BUT the brake is horrible + terrible. I literally have to stand on the brake to bring the car to stationary (from <60 Km/h) during a test drive (new car), and thereafter scrap my plan to get it for my wife.

Great read as always.

That's my "issue" with Japanese marques. They have way too many variations, sometimes meaningless. This creates so many artificial levels of markets, or at least they attempt to, and makes it more confusing for consumers to compare.

However, one exception I think is Mazda. They keep their models simple and the current models have effectively replaced the previous models, instead of adding on another layers. But also because Mazda don't have so many models in the first place, unlike Toyota.

I am still struggling to understand its older models. All the Celsior, Cressida, Allion, Corona...blah blah.

Lately been spotting some Honda Grace and suddenly I wonder how different is it from Honda City? Can't be arsed to find out anyway...

Yes and also in Chinese and Indian market they have other models.

With the rising popularity of EVs driven by stricter emissions standard, which favor Chinese auto makers, most Japanese car makers (except Toyota) have been trimming their product lineup, both in domestic and international market.

For the matter of fact, if not for the strong demand for kei car in Japan, due to tax break, many of these car makers would be struggling to survive, let alone coming up with enticing models.

The Japan FTW era is over, like it or not. Even the Korean are doing better in the last decade.

Don't talk about ICE or EV, the Japanese car design for the past decade was just too conservative.

The Korea design at least look much better on most of their model.
