It is not about how cheap petrol price was, but the road tax for diesel car used to be 6 times that of a car running on petrol!

Using the W126 S Class for example, the road tax for 300SEL was about $5.25K/yr, for diesel 300SDL, it would be ~$31. 5K/yr!!

Iirc, population of diesel driven passenger car was <20 in total, before the road tax structure was revised to make it more diesel "friendly".

Road tax for diesel taxi was $7,700/year regardless of engine capacity.

Wah piang since when I have become spoke person for LTA?!:we-all-gonna-die:

In the past (pre- Y2K), diesel engine was deemed as very pollutive (compared to petrol engine), mainly because of the thick black soot often seen from the tailpipe of diesel powered vehicles. During that era, vehicle emission was based on much lesser parameters (mainly carbon monoxide and particulate matters) so benefits of diesel engine such as better fuel efficiency and lower carbon dioxide emission was conveniently ignored.

In local context, in the drive towards a green city (which dated back to the 80s), exorbitant level of road tax was levied on diesel powered vehicle to curb its population. Why 6 times? That I don't know as I am neither a member of the cabinet nor someone with LTA. But I do remember during the same era, company car (those starting with 'Q' in the VRN, e.g. QC, QEN, QBA) has to pay 2 times the road tax of a private passenger car, so I am just wondering if anyone would be insane enough to register a diesel vehicle under the company car scheme... 12 times the the road tax, LTA bee tang liao!!
