Just that you know, this is how choreographed kampung negotiations have always been.

its a performance to gain power and support.

basically is a give me back my money or else situation. Own Tw extends the sea control area, obviously must take back. A pipe dream unless collapse cccp which nobody sane wants.

ang mo hold all the tea in china (gold), where got return one?

that’s why cks never got buried.

still the food in tw is fantastic. 👍

Taiwan says US arms sale shows 'commitment to defence' against China.

The United States, a close partner of Taipei, on Wednesday approved two military sales to Taiwan worth approximately US$300 million in total, mostly of spare and repair parts for the island's F-16 fighter jets.

The sales approvals were announced in two statements from the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency, set up to provide assistance to the United States' allies and partners.

The United States switched diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing in 1979 but it has remained Taiwan's most important partner and biggest arms supplier, sparking repeated condemnations from China.

Taiwan's defence ministry on Thursday expressed gratitude for the approval of the arms sale, which it expected to take effect in a month's time.

You think Taiwan will declare independence, at the behest of the US, or XJP will invade to take back Taiwan before he steps down. ie. for his bloody legacy?

My take being, Biden wants china to engage in a conflict, either in TW or SCS or even both.

India though also reporting low-intensity conflict, knows its for showmanship / distraction / bogeyman, and too smart to be baited in to do more, hence the QUAD is kind of inactive.

With the G7 pressing on China, tariffs levied, trade reduced, investment plummeting, reputation tarnished, etc, even before china makes the move, makes the cost to realise their claim less costly.

Weeks and months prior the inauguration speech of William Lai, many dovish overtures to ROC were made by PRC.

Even US seem to be on china's side by meeting with Lai on multiple occasions, with Blinken and Yellen allowed to visit china for discussions.

However, when Xi met Putin in his new term and continued to show strong/stronger interconnections, Lai was allowed his free reign and gave declaration tantamount to treason against the ROC constitution.

Today, Taiwan's new defence minister just declared there is no longer a requirement for ROC military commanders and their deputies to stagger their leaves, and can simultaneously take absence.

To think from DPP pov, it means in times of crisis, their supporters and otherwise, can just take leave to the nearest airport and leave the grunts to decide how to react to the PRC invasion force.

It makes Taiwan a much more attractive target, as the cost is again reduced.

What US benefits from,

Is the "legitimate" right to write off national debts owing to China, and also to "punish" PRC citizens/supporters by freezing, then confiscating the personal and company assets.

@Ender has repeatedly lambasted US for their lumbering/half hearted effort in aid of Ukraine, and against Russia.

History will repeat itself.

The arsonist never puts out the fire, but stokes the embers

Given these calculations, there is no reason to wait another 50 years

Thanks for sharing. I sort of agree with you.  War looks increasingly likely. My view has changed since last year but I hope I am wrong.

Perhaps time to hedge.

If China goes to war with TW then Xi would not be in charge, the generals will be in charge and we all know what the head of the rocket force will do to white feather.

'A Soldier Carries a Bow'

One of the prophecies apparently troubling Xi comes from an ancient Chinese book called the Tui Bei Tu (推背图).

A soldier carries a bow,
Saying only, 'I am the old man with white hair.'
In the east gate, a golden sword lies hidden;
A brave warrior enters the imperial palace from the rear gate.

The white-feathered bird is killed on this side of the mountain."

Some say that the four black birds represent the first four leaders of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP): Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin, and Hu Jintao. The fifth, white-feathered bird represents Xi Jinping.
