Ingenius Turbocharged July 26, 2022 Share July 26, 2022 (edited) I agree it's better to give subsidy like baby bonus which the recipient can decide how to use it, rather than fixed on Coe subsidy. Also, there are some rich families with three or more children, and they already enjoy substantial income tax rebate. Should they still qualify for the subsidy based on need ? And what about other groups with elderly parents and parents in laws, handicap children, will start to justify their need also. Then there will be people who try to take advantage of the system (e.g. my dad is old and i purposely buy a wheelchair for him and get a specialist to certify that his leg pain, cannot walk far) and then enforcement will be a nightmare.

By having a luxury car Coe category and limiting the quota, the prices will increase, to a point that some buyers will then switch to buy lower category car. This will eventually drive up the price of other categories as well.

I agree it is not easy so the priority needs to be worth the trade offs in implementation. I feel helping families is a worthy enough cause. Our birthrate is a huge prob, just because our gov forgot about it does not mean the problem went away.

The policy is not based on need of individual family… the policy is based on the need of Singapore to increase our birth rate. That is the objective. I know just giving this rebate will not make people go and have the third kid, but the same can be said for every baby policy. The point is always have family friendly policies such that as a whole, all of them will make a difference. Edited July 26, 2022 by Wind30
Kopites Supersonic July 26, 2022 Share July 26, 2022 Self entitlement discussion. Wanting the wealthy to subsidise the poor to car ownership? Sigh… its wanting the singles, small family to subsidise big families for car ownership. Sometimes I wonder why I even bother when people don’t read. If it's helping birth rate, there are many other things the govt can do to boost it, which is much more effective than priority for a car. For example, if a family with 3 or more kids can have priority in any new HDB prime location launch, or priority to take part in primary school admission phase 2A/2B, it will have much greater impact than having priority to buy cars. Or they can even give crazy idea that they will have priority booking when it comes to taxi/PHV service. ↡ Advertisement
