NEW DELHI: Many Indians are delighted at the prospect of Rishi Sunak becoming the first person of Indian origin to become British prime minister on Monday (Oct 24), just as Hindus across the world celebrate Deepavali.

Boris Johnson pulled out of the prime ministerial race late on Sunday, boosting Sunak's chances of taking the top job and replacing his Conservative party leadership rival Liz Truss, who quit after a month and a half as her support evaporated.

Some Indians said on social media that Sunak becoming prime minister this year would be even more special as India recently celebrated 75 years of its independence from British colonial rule.

Congrats to sunak for being the first South asian UK PM, but he is in danger of having an even shorter term than liz. In lots of ways shits about to hit the fan there, he doesnt have the support of the electorate,  and also well known for being a c unit.
