Went for my 2nd Swiss trip last Sep/Oct after some 20 years since last. Self drive for a F&E trip, flew into Geneva and out Zurich. Main purpose for the trip was to stay on mountain tops at Jungfrau eg Wengen, Murren. From Geneva, 1st stop was Chamonix, France before driving and parking at Tasch for train to Zermatt. Driving of course is much more costly than taking public transportation but the convenience I enjoyed is priceless. Wake up anytime, enjoy a nice brekkie, load up and off we go to the next stop. The most interesting drive was from Tasch to Interlaken where the winding mountain route was breathtaking and a section was done on a train through the mountains after driving up the train platform. Just back from the French Riviera/Italy trip and also did a F&E self drive. The total bill for car rental was almost 2K euros which was more than the airtickets. Hehe

if you are already familiar with europe, probably more fun to drive.

However, i will still take train/public transport if i were to go back again due to time and cost.

@Jman888 Self drive is definitely more fun, cost aside. Just pop over to anywhere along the trip which you think could be interesting. Just like last Swiss trip, detoured to Liechtenstein for a one night stay in the mountains, simply love it. Also this recent FR/Italy trip, went up to San Marino for an overnight stay and again, no regrets. Besides, we really don't have to be familiar with the place we visit with the help of Goggle map. My recent trip rental car came with a good navigation system onboard so that made life lagi fun and easy.
