HK's Jumbo Floating Restaurant capsized in South China Sea on Sunday. Tragic!

Hong Kong’s iconic Jumbo Floating Restaurant has capsized in the South China Sea, following its departure last Tuesday for a new home in an unannounced place, its owner has confirmed.

In a statement on Monday, the Aberdeen Restaurant Enterprises said: “On Saturday afternoon, it was passing Xisha Islands [Paracel Islands] in the South China Sea when the vessel encountered adverse conditions … [water entered the vessel] before it began to tip.

“Despite the efforts of the towing company responsible for the trip to rescue the vessel, unfortunately it capsized on Sunday.”

“The water depth at the scene is over 1,000 metres, making it extremely difficult to carry out salvage works,” it said, adding that it was “very saddened” by the incident and was seeking further information from the towing company.

Tragic! End of an era for an icon and symbol of Hong Kong. It was never going to end well with the kinda condition it was in. Kitchen barge started sinking on 1st June after its announcement to depart Hong Kong. Singaporeans will say "Huat ah! Can claim insurance liao!"

I smell a rat. The floating restaurant has experienced countless typhoon in the past 40 years, yet capsized when been towed to an undisclosed location. 

If the accident is for real, it is really a blessing in disguise for its owner and patrons (if it still remain as a floating restaurant).

it was floating not sailing for decades, maybe it has forgotten how to sail in sea as a boat

Look at the size of it, top heavy bottom light.  It hasn't sailed for so many years, of cos it will sink once moved.  I'd be surprised if it doesn't.

The insurance company must be panting now. Insurance, brokers, surveyors and law firms all will be involved.  

Two components here.

The hull, given it is a hull with age the market value should not  be that high. It depend on demensions of the hull. My guess in the range 2 to 4 million sing dollar insured sum, maybe lesser. 😁

Items or contents. The restaurant will be the bulk of payout. Imagine a few storeys high restaurant disappeared like that; fire, collapsed and in the case sank. 😁 

Two different type of payouts altogether. 😁

If it’s a storm, is it not considered force majeure ? So very little claim
