Japan to begin allowing tour groups, including from Singapore and Malaysia, from Jun 10

Japan announced on Thursday (May 26) it will reopen to tourists from 36 countries starting Jun 10, ending a two-year pandemic closure, but travelers will only be allowed in with tour groups. The decision comes after the government last week said it would test allowing small group tours with visitors from the United States, Australia, Thailand and Singapore from this month.

SoftBank rolls out used-car subscriptions with Singapore's Carro

Joint venture brings Vision Fund-backed startup's AI-driven pricing to Japan

TOKYO -- Japanese mobile carrier SoftBank Corp. has launched a service that lets users drive preowned cars in Japan for a flat fee in collaboration with Carro, a Singapore startup backed by the SoftBank Vision Fund.

The two companies have established a joint venture, Carro Japan, in a 51%-49% split with SoftBank holding the majority. The service begins Tuesday.

Carro's artificial intelligence program quotes subscription rates based on vehicles' pricing histories and other factors. Customers will pay about 20% less than they would for new-car subscriptions, according to SoftBank.

Carro Japan will begin with a business-to-business service, but it will consider rolling out a version for ordinary drivers.

Wait times for new vehicle deliveries in Japan have stretched to half a year or more, owing to a global chip shortage and supply chain disruptions from Shanghai's lockdown.

These conditions have ratcheted up demand for preowned vehicles. The average closing price on used cars spiked 29% in August compared to a year earlier, according to USS, Japan's biggest used-vehicle auction platform.

With SoftBank's mobile segment struggling after offering low-cost phone plans in response to government pressure, the company is looking to grow its non-telecom businesses.

Carro, founded in 2015, operates in Singapore, Thailand and other Southeast Asian markets. The startup has streamlined used-car sales on its platform through AI-assisted pricing and sales.

Last year, Carro raised $360 million in a funding round led by SoftBank Group's Vision Fund.
