I can understand this mooncake is a traditional thing and symbolic. Ok for merchants to make some money but how could a box of 4 cost $99?

The ingredients were prepared months ago, not even fresh. Somehow people feel giving expensive stuff mean sincerity, respect or something. I am sure for the money paid, you can get a nicer and better quality box that suit you need too.

Box of 4 cost $99 mooncakes. The flavour must be special, plus branded, thats why can sell at such pricing?!

I am not a mooncake fan, but when I was in JB last month and saw how unbelievably low price the mooncake there, I can't help but to buy just a piece to try.

It's pretty good despite the much lower price.

I really feel locals in SG kena carrot all the time from businesses because they know locals can afford to pay.

That's why I don't eat bak chang during dragon boat festival.

I don't buy the idea during this day the price must go up.

Mooncake just has too much sugar and oil....

MAF is big in China...

But I am not celebrating here.

It's an overly marketed/rated Chinese festival that F&B establishments thought they can earn higher gross profit.

Exactly, don't fall prey to capitalism.....😁

In addition, to fleece this mooncake thing further, they now come out with various exotic flavours which they obviously charge another arm and a  leg.

Tradition is no more than just a word that boost commercialism to make more money out of consumers

🙄

I will rather buy the traditional Teochew style mooncake.....

But now Teochew restaurants also increase price.... for such mooncakes.

Must go to those traditional bakery.

Increase price is not a problem as long it is logical and reasonable. Surely, over the years there will be inflation to everything.

But when I look at mooncakes, it is like 100% increase or more over the last decade.

When on earth did we have a 10% inflation rate every single year for the last decade?

Is that reasonable?

Not for me, so screw it.....😆

Things have also changed for the consumers.

Besides the "young seniors", more younger families are doing away with traditional foods that are exaggerating expensive during festivals, or they simply give up on the cultures.

I have seen lesser families buying bak kwa during CNY.

I have seen lesser families buying mooncakes and lanterns during mid autumn festivals.

Dragon boat festivals just come and go, most did not even bother to eat dumplings.

In fact I have eaten mooncakes only at companies which were given by suppliers instead.
