Maintain or replace?

How to maintain a fuel pump, starter, alternator, ignition coils etc?

Take out and wash? Put oil and lubricate them?

:D

Hahaha, spray some perfume and put back!

If they function normally, don't disturb lah!

Fuel pump maintenance I know is not to let fuel tank drained out too often but the other items I think can only change new ones after certain number of years if owner wants to have some assurance that they won't fail in the next few years.

If car use timing belt then need to change 60k to 90k km

and at the same time might as well change the water pump

as just to change the water pump have pay the labour cost again.

Save cost to just do both at the same time.

:D

Think for alternator there will be some warning signs. Like for my case there was a period of time got some  weird sound  on and off when driving a couple of days before alternator finally gave up. I thought I had hit something under the car carriage and went to work shop to check but couldn’t find source  of noise. A few days later  on 1 march 2021, my battery  warning light suddenly  turned on, faster went to the nearest gas station. Battery became flat just as I managed to pull in to  Newton gas station with Stanford tyres shop attached. Shop checked and alternator was dead that’s why battery drained completely flat. They changed New battery for me costing 115 dollars then I drove to nearest workshop.  (Found one shell auto serv at Moulmein road where they ordered new alternator (original  Dont have  recon or OEM) which cost me 800 plus dollars including labor. Total damage 1k in one day zzz. Forgot to mention my car was 12  years old  last year when the original alternator gave up.

Likewise for me, my alternator started showing signs when I had my headlights turned on with the hazard lights and the interior cabin light on.

The interior lights started flickering one day as I parked my car and was about to shut off everything.

Went to workshop and my mechanic confirmed with a voltage test that the alternator was failing soon, as it was outputting a lower voltage range (low 13.x volts instead of a high 13.x volt range).

So I changed that.

Water pump, also managed to change it before it broke as I observed a funny sound one fine day. Brought to workshop to check, found the pump was leaking, and also it wouldn't turn smoothly (bearings were shot).

So I changed that as well.

did you keep the alternator? can be easily striped and rebuilt, replacing the brushes and bearings

lucky for you. for me to only sign was the battery light coming on, while driving home. which means alternator conk already. the very next day, just drove straight to workshop with aircon and radio off. try to reduce the electrical load. battery survived. i think overall distance was 10km at most, once the alternator conked.

This technology i guess abt 10 to 15 years.. does it wear off parts faster? Battery and alternator lifespan affected?

I always switch it off. Petrol save will go to battery replacement...save the hassle as it's easier to pump petrol than to change battery...especially if it's a sudden death of battery...also need to add for recovery service 😁

Most of the time the workshop's cost is assuming they take back in the faulty alternator and they will throw into the junk pile first to be assessed whether it's good for reconditioning.

Don't believe me? You can try to ask the workshop that you want to take back the faulty part - see how fast their tone changes and the cost quoted to you change as well...

2 wks ago removed and disassemble my almost 15yo alternator to see if it was the alternator making noise with the help of youtube videos.

Saw the brush was quite short and the rotor commutator has "a step"

I rem see some post alternator  parts supplier in Singapore but couldn't find  the post.

I think it is difficult to get a brush for alternator.

If yours is a common car, then you probably can google the alternator model and buy the part online

You're lucky they still bother to fix it for you... My workshop won't bother with such repairs, and will simply sell a proper reconditioned unit or a brand new one.

Asked them why? They said repair takes too much time; they'll just swap in a recon unit for customer and take back the customer's existing unit.. And off you go within the same working day.

Its like that . the cost is the same.

a recon unit is repair from a damage unit. just that they fix it and get it ready before hand.

as customer we dun need wait for them to fix our damage, and for ws , there is no rush for them to repair at once also esp if they busy .

Yes I understand this part on the workshop wanting to save their time.

The only crap situation I encountered was I had an original part that broke (it was a driveshaft), and the guy wanted to swap in a reconditioned OEM part - and I still must pay for it!

The original driveshaft cost 3-4x that of the OEM part!

they probably took an old orig driveshaft and replaced the CV joints on both ends, thus OEM.. depending on the CV joints used. could be as good as orig
