Bad driving advice

Signalling is optional

In Ubi driving school back in 2007, one instructor told me that "now you must signal every time, but once you pass it's up to you".

My 5 years in Australia showed me what an uncultured a**hole/idiot I looked like by signaling arbitrarily. Since then I signal like a robot, 100% of the time, even when in carparks and when on empty-looking roads.

Jam brake if someone tailgates you

This one came from peers who were newly minted drivers during NS. I never had the balls to do it, but soon realised it was ridiculous, dangerous, and illegal.

No need to signal if on a turning only lane at a traffic junction

This is similar to my first point. When someone said this to me, I asked "do you signal to show other road users where you are intending to go, or for yourself to see?"

There are all kinds of road users on the road, other vehicles, pedestrians, nowadays E-scooters and bicycles...etc. many people will be looking to your signal to make decisions and you may not even realise it.

If you yield to faster vehicles while driving at 90km/h on the right-most lane, you are abetting them in commiting a crime (of speeding)

If they speed and get caught, that's their business. All I can say is that you would be committing the (at minimum, antisocial) crime of road hogging if you failed to yield.

What other bad driving advice have you received?

Not say that is good to jam brake when someone tailgate you, but there is good explanation to brake and slow down when the vehicle behind is too close. It is to slow down his speed to correspond to the reduced safety distance. [laugh]

Now we know why road hoggers always brake check tailgaters.

Fooked up instructor should have said.

Move to lane 2 when tailgater behind lah!

that depends on the road hoggers car and the tailgater car!! eg. a hatchback road hogger vs a big SUV or lorry!!! good luck in jam brake!!! you can collect insurance money on the behalf of the possible death rear seat passengers or yourself handicap! traffic law hogger jam brake, tailgater unlikely to be jail with car cam 😅

verdict my next car gonna be a SUV more than 5m long in size 😁👍🏻

I always laugh silently in the car when people signal on the single lane road with a 90 degree bend.

I mean..... If any car don't go with the bend they likely end in the drain.

Obviously need to follow the bend.....but it's not changing lane or a turn.

Yes it's helps cars behind to see there is a bend ahead....

It's like getting MRT to signal left or right one track with a bend.🤣

Well to be clear, I'm talking about actual turn junctions, not the contours of a road.

The dumbest advice I think is when you ask for tips when you are about to take the basic theory test, you will very often hear ppl say, very easy, common sense, blah blah blah. But when you start driving on the roads then you realised what a joke that is.

Ppl suka suka drive like their father's road. What common sense?

Plus when I first took my basic theory test I was only 16yo, and took advance theory when I was 17yo. How would I naturally know the rules about driving? And the rules about driving arent "common sense", you have to read and learn about them. What a load of BS.

This is what advice i will give to newbies who are taking the theory test for the first time.

If you are young and clueless like I once was, this is what you do. On your first test, go to the test center remember as many MCQ questions as you can, remember what will be asked. Look at some of the answers too cos some will be tricky as the answers can be very close ie. timings. Spend as much time as you can to look at the questions. It is ok to hand in a blank paper.

The moment you reach home, circle/tick/highlight what will be asked on your theory booklet. Go study and know the answers. You will likely pass on the second attempt.

This is what I did for both my theory tests and i will pass on my second attempt. I thought I also need to do the same for my practical but luckily I passed on my first attempt. I think my teacher gave me a lot of good advice.

Who say I didn't turn on my headlights, my DRLs are on!

Reminds me of those who do not turn on their headlights in the carpark, thinking their drls are sufficient.

Seriously not helpful when you are trying to get out of a lot.

Lights not only for the driver to see but for others to be warned, especially blind corners.

Of course...

Just to be clear I am just giving an example. Not laughing at you.

Ido signal everywhere too. Except bends😂😂

I think there is a 10year series for basic and advance theory now.
I would think those who pass the 1st time make better drivers. 🤣

Many old timers say switch on headlights for what. Waste battery and kill light bulbs faster!

I always on headlights, DRL is not enough to let drivers notice a car is approaching from opposite direction or approaching from the drive way while in carpark lot.
