Need a few countries to spike in Omicron cases to confirm if the 'mildness' are repeating..  UK is a good candidate to observe next, as they are spiking..

It looks like pfizer omicron-specific vaccine is coming, since EU has plans to order it.

EU to order Pfizer shots tailored to Omicron

Fri, 17 December 2021, 10:43 pm

EU member states plan to buy over 180 million doses of a vaccine designed to combat the Omicron variant.

It's being developed by Pfizer and BioNTech, and is a version of their existing shot.

The pair have said they can have it ready in March.

News of the EU's planned order came late Thursday (December 16) night from European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen.

A Commission spokesperson said deliveries would start in the second quarter, should the drug be fully approved.

The EU's latest contract with Pfizer and BioNTech allows member states to buy up to 1.8 billion doses through 2023.

About half that amount has already been ordered.

Pfizer says talks about the remaining doses have not yet covered orders for an adapted vaccine.

The European Medicines Agency has so far said there is no conclusive evidence that an Omicron-specific version is necessary.

No need 3 phase trial and already order the millions of doses?  Didn't expect EU to be so desperate til they lax their qualifications.

I think EU got smacked previously when they were slow in acquiring vaccine (vs UK bcuz of Brexit), so now they don't want to be caught in that position again. [:p]

Omicron more likely to reinfect than Delta, no milder - study

0%-20% against symptomatic infection after 2nd dose?? No wonder so urgent to boost..

Quote

The study involved AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines.

Depending on the estimates used for vaccine effectiveness against symptomatic infection from the Delta variant, this translates into vaccine effectiveness of between 0% and 20% after two doses, and between 55% and 80% after a booster dose.

In mid Apr 2020, UK reported daily positive Covid cases of 4k with death of 1k a day.

This week, UK reported 90k Covid cases a day, more than 50% Omicron, and 1 death so far from Omicron (may still be early days but I also didn’t read South Africans are  dropping off like flies).

So Omicron may not be any less mild than Delta (to be confirmed) but the early numbers suggested otherwise, perhaps it is the vaccines and or past infections that are helping.

We ordered vaccine in it’s early development stage.

Only when it went through all trial phase would be approved for local use.

Only rich economy can order ahead

April it's the Alpha or Beta variant.. More deadly situation..  Actually the Delta wave, death rate was alot lower. Agree by then, they have a higher vaccination population.

This early study is for symptomatic cases, so it not less mild in terms of symptomatic cases... More severe situation, I guess probably no sizeable data for hospital and death yet,  for a study??
