A soundbar works alone to recreate surround sound or stereo sound, depending on setting and model. Its not meant to be added to any system. Its meant for those with COs that absolutely forbid you spending thousands and running meters of cables in the house, and putting all sorts of speakers around the TV.

They have omni-directional speakers that, with an in built setup routine, can imitate a 5.1 or 7.1 system to a varying degrees.

Precisely...my first experience with it was...I thought the sound was from the sides of my bedroom when I got out of the bathroom...quickly got a 2.1 for the hall to irritate my neighbours...😂

Even if you pay me money, I won’t go to the cinema right now

to me it’s a fellowship thing. I prefer my sound system 👍

My woofer is a down firing one...placed it under a thick carpet but could still felt the rumble...had to move it to sit on the TV console to minimise the disturbance 😅

I have the Sonos Beam Gen 1. Looking at the specs for Gen 2, I feel it is still ok to get the Gen 1 given the huge price difference and not much upgrade on the Gen 2.

Basically, watching movies with any SB, the sound is "okay". The gap between 7.1 or 9.1/9.2 type of setup and SB is still vast. When producing sound from single point source, they try to emulate surround sound by bouncing it off surfaces. If the room or positioning of the SB is not optimum, still can get the perception the sound is not really balance. So room is quite important.

Functionality wise, to me the most important is HDMI Arc to let it connect to and play from a few sources. The absence/lack of Bluetooth connectivity - this will be the reason I will not get another Sonos for now. Looking at the Naim Mu-so 2 when it gets cheaper in the future (Gen 1 no HDMI Arc).
