Windwaver Turbocharged November 9, 2021 Share November 9, 2021 https://www.straitstimes.com/opinion/forum/forum-seniors-should-not-stand-in-the-way-of-younger-staff Forum: Seniors should not stand in the way of younger staff Singapore must tread carefully in handling the issue of raising the retirement and re-employment ages. Care must be taken not to cause resentment on the part of younger workers. Workers in their prime (early to late 30s) might not be able to advance in the company's hierarchy if the seniors above them won't retire. Older workers who can afford to retire early should give the younger generation a chance to climb up. They can always volunteer or offer mentorship to the young if they are bored with retirement. If too many seniors cling to their jobs even when they don't need them, there may be fewer opportunities for the next generation. Francis Cheng Seems that old folks not needed in our country, just like what COVID-19 is doing to us. ↡ Advertisement

Victor68 Turbocharged November 9, 2021 Share November 9, 2021 First, what does it mean by retiring in Singapore context? Are we saying stop working instead? Then the reasons for one to decide to stop working can be many reasons. If you need that money to survive, then retirement is out of the question because there is no pension scheme here.

13177 Hypersonic November 9, 2021 Share November 9, 2021 Article mentioned ''Workers in their prime (early to late 30s) might not be able to advance in the company's hierarchy if the seniors above them won't retire.'' This is quite true, esp those seniors who are working in senior management or high position in the company, many of them work even until past re-employment age and still working. So staff below wait until neck long long also cannot get promote up. Lol. Many times these seniors in the high position would always say they cannot retire and have to continue to work, cause they cannot find anyone who can be their successor?! The company have to ask the old managers to defer retirement.
