This is my personal view. If it does not cost me much to help an ex-colleague whom I was on good terms with, I will help. Maybe he will get promoted. I will also help my ex-supervisor if he asks nicely, and he has been fair to me in the past. If a supervisor or colleague that I do not want to help calls, I feign amnesia. For helping, I will differentiate between colleagues and the company. Colleagues I help, ex-company I am under no obligation to do so.

Companies have short memories, but people you help do remember in most cases. My career went full circle, and I got retrenched during the recession. Offers to place me came from those whom I had helped in the past. I was referred and recommended for vacancies that only insiders know of. I found my next job through such a channel. Long after a company forgets you, ex-colleagues will remember you even after they have moved to other companies and gotten promoted to senior positions.

Well said. I had similar experience, lots of ex colleagues went all out to help when I needed it. It pays to be kind.

It’s not the RO here but the employee

when I left my academic position , it was a shock to my boss but I personally hand picked my successor and he stayed there for the next 15 years. My boss was very grateful that the continuity was there as the handover was smooth and I ensured that even after I left , the new incumbent was up to speed on his tasks and I was settled in another position

and again, I had a good relationship with the boss who would not hesitate to take me back if ever I wanted to.

in TS case, see who is the benefactor here and if it is at the lower level, that will be paid forward sometime down the road, intangibly or tangibly

My policy is however, “a horse never goes back to old grass”

Turbocharged

There is no perfect handover because you can't document down corporate knowledge built over your years in that job. Where I remember and I can help, I will. Whether the request is from my ex-team, ex-boss or ex-colleagues. Although this is not the main purpose of helping others, you'll never know if those you help now might help you next time.

Actually no big deal if they call you and ask a question. Can always provide some verbal guidance if you do remember. Cannot remember just say "cannot remember, so sorry".

Don't count pennies. Look at big picture.

If the horse is happy eating old grass, why not? The grass over the fence might not taste as good.

As long as eat already happy, can go back eat lah.

(edited)

Status update; so that ex-colleague A called again to request for info that was in the handover excel sheet. I didnt pick up the call and he dropped me a text.

I replied him about 20mins later; told him politely my last day was 2 days ago, all the info is in the excel sheet and another ex colleague B following up is aware of the details. He replied shortly "Nvm, thanks". I think I may have burned a bridge there but the daily calls were getting ridiculous. Its like I never left the company, just took a long leave is all. *Facepalm* I hope he got the message🙄

@Jamesc No la not strawberry gen. The irony is he's older than me in his 40s bro and been in the job longer than I have. Ex-colleague A is in a managerial position, same as I was but the issue is he doesn't trust his guy (ex-colleague B) that I handed over my duties to. Let's just say ex-colleague B has a...poor reputation for work.

Moreover, we had a skype session together (ex-colleague A, B, myself and our boss) a month ago to discuss all the handing over duties. When asked during the session, they all said no issue. Now come kaciao me after my last day, I was like what the heck man, is it just me or are they being unprofessional with work.

And no I wasn't from SAF haha.
