PSLE exams.... what is it for???

It's not a bad question, especially if one uses algebra. The problem is that the "educators" here try to mangle our children's mental processes early in their development to cripple any algebraic thought in a very misguided attempt to push some weird "visual right-brain" agenda or something. So they need to come up with idiotic workarounds like shuffling coins back and forth. 🙄🙄🙄

Student suicide rate suggest otherwise.

For me with the introduction of Internet and easy accessibility to it (at least in Singapore); study or learning should not be confine to syllabus/structure.

With a bounded curriculum it may actually hinder the development and creativity of the kids/learner.

My son friend actually a school drop out.. but he acquired special skill and make more money than any top tier school gradate. He is now 23 and looking to purchase his 5 car..

Of cos this is one in a million lah.. as a parent will you dare to let your kids to detour from the standard pathway?

But hey this is Singapore where what govt say is should be correct! whahahahhahaha..

For me it’s the same about complaining about high coe prices.
Can afford mean scan afford, smart means smart.

I lucky my parents believe this.. i am not force to study when young.. failed english since young.. my colleague asked me how you get a NTU Engineering degree then? whahahahahahaha..

The fact is when young i always believe got 2 groups of people/brain; one good in maths/science the other in language/history/literature.. the Singapore education need you to be best in both.. harlow.. this goes beyond the nature setting.. through years i notice that the latter group can better maths/science through hard work.. but it stop there.. but the first group like me cannot really improve.. lucky now got Grammerly, spell check etc! whahahahahahah..

So to me the modern world will need you to be good in maths/science as with the help of modern word processor the language become less important.

Don't shoot me.. sharing my view only..

hmm i think this question is quite standard. Maybe bit challenging but nothing unusual.

I'm sure must have more difficult questions than this? Those shapes and area ones are much more difficult IMO.

With skills in language you write well. Word processors and grammerly can only help somewhat with the sentence, but still cannot help too much in bringing the message across with the right phrases or in a convincing tone if one requires it.

Agreed.
Bottom line is challenges in life is to separate the wheat from the chaff.

no different to SEALs training, business success, etc. that is life

I guess the unusual part of this question is that maybe part 1 is the crux of the question.

Where if u understand part 1, then u can do part 2 quite easily from there. Usually the harder questions will have an easier part 1 to lead to the more difficult part 2/3

Iirc... more sg students commit suicide than SEALS  died in training..  and we really shouldn't compare with professional SEALS at all.

"The suicide incidence rate among those aged 10 to 19 had risen from 4.0 per 100,000 in 2019 to 5.5 per 100,000 in 2020

Twincharged

For those students/parents who have nervous breakdowns everytime a difficult PSLE exam question is encountered, please do not go to secondary schools like NUS High, RI, RGS.....

Problem is they meltdown precisely because they want to go to NUS High, RI, RGS........

Yes, we should take care for this vulnerable group, but it doesn’t mean lowering standards and make everything easy in life.

How to differentiate?

Personally I saw the "tough" questions being discussed and I thought previous editions' tough questions were actually much tougher. Wonder if anyone agrees?

And that's what worries me, the mentality of demanding more for less, the entitled way of thinking (my kid already work so hard so should deserve something), the lack of resilience among the younger generation these days, all these are the more important underlying issues.

Maybe is the parents mentally not tough? Upset their children not to their desire expectations, make them lose face when they wanna compare with their peers children ? So use children “stress” “upset” to complain for themselves?

then when adults say tough tough the children overtime will believe and also feel this is super really tough? When maybe only just tough?  Children tend to like and “idolise” their parents?

So parents fault! change the parents and problem solved.

I believe manage one expectation and mindset is very important. So the parents aren’t helping but  setting fear in children , especially for the not so mentally strong children

eg. Is army really that tough or a fun ritual mile stone for all Singaporean ? Many times I see boys before going to NS so fearful , many come out fine, but some have mental scar before going into NS and carry the scar during the service……

I hear lotsa shit before my NS but I find it actually quite fun and difference  Singaporean guys from other international students when I went overseas for my university education.

BTW I am PES A combat vocation in the mid 1990s era NSF. So not saying from PES C9L2 or lower experience 😁

Exactly… a lot of maths is confidence and ability to concentrate. If you can break down and cry in exams, it’s not the papers fault but your parents fault.

The main problem here is lack of resilience, not lack of math ability. Cannot solve a math problem will lead a person to break down, or go jump?? Then next time how are they going to face work and life problems which don't have a clear solution?? [laugh]

For me, if i see majority of the cohort crying, then if i didn't do too well, i won't be worried.

I will only cry if i see everyone cheering and smiling when they walk out of exam, but i personally found that it is a very tough paper!! [laugh]
