For Lower Primary they will start learning Math thru these blocks or models which I mentioned earlier. They start from here and progress to what I posted earlier. They will know how to visualize by using these blocks to solve the questions.

The single block represent 1 unit, The strip represent 10 units and the big block is 100 units.

Just by looking at it the kids know how many unit when they do addition, subtraction and etc.

The one strip of blocks will be used most often like the P6 problem sums.

Answer 1 is Helen got $12 more

Answer 2 is 1.026kg ??

I just use pure algebra for 1st one.......quite easy. For 2nd one, I think for quite long, in the end, make some assumption for the number of 50 cents that Helen has and then from there, can get the answer liow. But not sure if that answer is right or not.

I dunno what visualisation method, just use  algebra only.....but I think if in the real exam, I may skip question 2 cos took me quite long time to get answer. hahaha

If you look at the weightage or points the questions has 2 marks each, a total of 4 points.

If the students have done all other questions except for this question...I mean why are they crying?

Maybe they will get some partial marks like 1 or even 0.5 if they try to draw out the model. They wont lose a lot of marks.

Govt should abolish the GEP program at the Primary 3 level.
It is an unnecessary level of stress for students at such young age and also stressing the parents who wish that their children can be streamed into gifted programmes and transfer to elite schools.
It is also unfair to stream those "gifted" students into special programmes for special training and attention while neglecting the mainstream others.

Actually the Gep nowadays is just three years… it really is not that big a deal.

My kid took the math paper yesterday. Said its a pretty ok paper. Math and honesty are not my kid's strong points though.

I've worked with 2 IIT grads in Sg. Both started off as engineers 20 years back. They are the rare proper talented ones but cant say the same for others . Both are now ceo-1 level in seperate mncs here.

Well that what I am driving at as well.. while we are bellyaching n umbrage about the opening of flood gates of white collar workers that does little or nothing for the enterprise, the policy makers seems to try to educate us with the relavence of migrant n maids n nurses which we are totally in agreement n do not have that huge resistance to the idea.

what makes matter worse is the muddy of the situation by clubbing the migrants workers as FT. And hence we should be very clear with what we don’t agree on..

creating an education system that is robust and meets the demand of the business landscape is so fluid that we start to pride ourselves on rankings in the world. It does not help that a generic good degree is good enough. But more importantly, what are the range of business centric certifications is equally important that is currently lacking.

the hiring process if you look at the JD lately seems to indicate that the basic degree only allows you to knock on the door of those that are hiring. The cert allows you to have the company open the door to invite you for a discussion. And the rest as they say, it depends on who you know rather than what you know that matters. And that’s the painful reality that we are experiencing that no one wants to acknowledge that’s causing us grief. No matter what you term it as … no one owes u a living or the company has their own rights to hire who they want that’s increasing the anxiety in the environment

I have two primary school going children. They are now taught by using such blocks or "models"(see my next post) that you see above. It is a lot more on visualization. And language when it comes to understanding the question.

Whatever we learnt in the past, it is better to unlearn them and adopt this. It is easier to solve than you use Algebra.

Once you can draw out the big picture you are there. Even for me I have to read the question for the problem sums several times to get it right. We say it is tough because we learn Math but we dont know how to apply it. We learned the way of solving equations. And then our standard of English also sucks.

Part a can be done by just understanding Helen has 40 coins that is diffferent…. 50 cents vs 20 cents. I asked my p1 boy to see if he can do part a, he can’t. But I think p3 should be able to.

Hehe... same here but my friend's wifey solved it in 2 minutes then ask, "difficult?"

My friend replied "I am still the one paying the bills, so go do the dishes now". 😁

Sorry, I too proud to ask how its solved too, for now. 😂😂

Stay safe

Yes, this is how they were taught. The difference in weight and value all lies within that 40 coins. So the working for part i) and ii) is similar.

40 coins with $0.3 difference per 50cent and 20 cents will give a total of $12

Likewise 40 coins with a 2.7 gram difference per 50 cent and 20 cents will give a total difference of 108 gram. Just minus this 108 gram from Helens total weight will give you 1.026kg.

Wow. Thank you. Save my face to ask friend's wifey for answer hehe. Yes, I will get it myself eventually but brain freeze, seasonal. But I suspect laziness is main cause in my case. Anything beyond 1+1=11 is auto brain freeze for me.

sometimes i wonder.... what is the purpose really?

why when US EU etc dont do things this way, yet they are the FT talents here, they make the Nobel Prizes and make the inventions.

hell.... even Uptron is considered better in the end.

So.... why are we doing this to our children? Bragging rights?
