over the May Day holiday, i flew to Hanoi, rented a CB150X and went to ride around the north west of the country. I had previously gone to the north east (Ha Giang etc) and was keen to see more of the country. May signifies the start of summer, which also happens to be the rainy season in the north, so i brought my rain gear with me. Thankfully i didn't encouter any rain while riding until my return to Hanoi. 

The rental bike was quite new - 5k km on the odo. Rental is USD25/day, with a deposit of USD800.

i absolutely love riding in the mountains. Cool climate, awesome views and interesting roads. I was mostly above 1000m AMSL, reaching 2000m AMSL at one particular mountain pass. The mornings were usually cloudy/foggy, but would clear up in the afternoon. Encountered some overnight rains/storms but it stopped by the time i was up for breakfast. Roads were a mix of nice smooth tarmac, old broken roads and roads under construction (gravel, clay etc)

While i was in the countryside, a particularly aggressive dog bit me on my right leg, just above the ankle. i had stopped to take some pics by the road, close to the dog's dwelling place. It was barking furiously behind a fence, so i thought i was safe. Only later when i looked back at my pics did i realise the fence ended at the sides - the rear was open and passable. Anyway, i had done a u-turn to take more pics and the dog was behind me. I suddenly felt pressure and teeth on my right leg, which fortunately was raised on the foot peg/brake. The dog bit half on my mid-height touring boot and half on my shin. The boot stopped the teeth from penetrating, so i was extremely thankful i was wearing them. i got a shock, shook the dog off and zoomed off on the bike before it had a second go.

a very interesting trip, if i may say so. LOL

Now that i got back  bike for myself, we can do meet ups again.

havent done bike meet ups since more than 20 yrs ago.
