Dealer tweaked mileage. Previous owner showed me service records to prove this. What are my options?

@JamescIs it okay to say 50 percent of used car dealers are dishonest, 25 percent are just okay ones, and 25 percent are fantastic ones?[rolleyes]:D

More like 97%, 2% and 1%

This is not limited to ah beng dealers. I traded in my Jetta years ago to an AD which has a sis company selling used cars. That car was around xx km when I handed over to them but they listed the mileage at xx less 15% in their sis company website...

I would buy used car only if the car have valid AD service label there showing genuine mileage, worth to pay bit more for this assurance.

I often wondered if it is possible for a car’s mileage to be clocked before it gets pushed to the dealer for a simple oil change to obtain that perceived legitimacy of its mileage.

Do ADs check the car’s current mileage against its previous and query or flag it out? Might vary from one dealership to another, I suspect.

@Macrosszero

Yes i believe this has been done before. I even view a car with 2 years no servicing records at AD, just nice 1 week before i view, the car went for a simple oil change at PML to clock in the legitimate mileage.

From 2019 to 2020, there was no records. Btw this is a 2016 car.

I asked the dealer, where's the missing records for that period, he say owner was on overseas assignment, no one drive...car was parked permanently...seldom used...

I believe something was done to the mileage.

recently I bought a used car

I only know the mileage after I drove it home, when I was recording the mileage in my maintenance record

I don't understand the obsession of mileage

it is the last thing I concern when buying a used car

I encountered this myself when I bought a 5 yr old Toyota from a famous J co which still exists today.  How I found out was accidental when during handover the SE passed me the inspection report when the sale was finally concluded.  The inspection report showed the original mileage was around 70k and the mileage became 50+k. the car was under utilized but they probably wanted to make it more saleable as it had a 2.5 liter engine.

fast forward to today and I still see the same thing happening. recently saw a 2016 Harrier with 150k mileage changed to 60k mileage and it was sold recently.  if u are curious, just follow and check out this current Harrier on auction and see how the mileage appears when it comes on sale in sg carmart.  this 2016 harrier current mileage is 141,105 km. I'm quite sure it will not have 141k mileage when it is being sold.

It is very simple why they do it. Cars in Sgp are a fast depreciating asset. The longer the car dealer leave the car in his parking lot the more the car's value depreciates...at his expense. If he dont make it look attractive to sell...by tampering the odo he will only make a loss. He cant afford to do that for every car in his inventory.

Although tampering of odometer is bad, but I feel that the one government really need to focused on is to tackle motor insurance fraud. This one is worst then tampering of odometer.

What kinda shit lousy reason is this? When some members hv already given simple ideas on how to prevent this odo tampering thing going abt?

Anyone in the right mind would know they are equally important. Imagine one still thinks that things like timing belt no need to change and voila, snaps like that?!

End of the day, it is still going to happen n nobody would wanna do anything.

Why go after this pool of dealers when they can be the ones who help to better circulate used cars in the mkt?

A used car dealer friend told me,

Customers expect shiny cars with low mileage at affordable prices. Want it cheap, want it fresh, want big boobs.

So they do a quick and nasty putty job to clean up all the scrapes and dings, shine the tires and dashboard, put perfume in the cabin and discard the service records.

The large part of the used car buying population wants cars like this. They sell. And in a used car lot, the pretty cars sell, not the honest ones.

When they take her home and she takes off her makeup and her clothes, then they realize she’s not the virgin they said she was… but money has changed hands and the deal is done.

as long as its not a finacial crime to reverse the mileage and there is no safety issue, this discussion will continue to be like speaking about religion with no right or wrong answer and no outcome.

So , if there is a benchmark that SGCarmart can place as a guide, like 1 year with anthing less that 5k mileage expected selling price with a formula, I suppose there will be a better reprsentation of intend to cheat and you can "probably" sue for criminal breech.
