What to do when your car skids?

Everyone knows that skidding is a common problem for drivers, and I'm sure some have even experienced it at one point throughout their driving experience.

As someone who has never had that problem yet (and I don't wish to), I'm not really sure what to do if my car were to ever skid. Do I steer away from the direction and pump the brakes or do I pray to God that I won't get to meet him so soon? Any tips on this? 😥

And also, I know that SG is probably filled with a lot of potential skidding hotspots. Are there any infamous areas that I should take note of? 👀

P.S. If you want to read about an accident that happened recently because of skidding, you can check out my blog post:

Drive a car that have ESP/traction control and good tires. The ESP/traction control will provide assistance by cutting power when the car is about to lose control.

For driver skills on countering oversteer and understeer, you have to go for advanced/defensive driving course.

Yeah. If without these items, you need to control your car brakes. do no slam on the brakes. chances are you will go everywhere. slow your car down until the tyres have grips, then stop the car.

You need to know and learn how to differentiate understeer and oversteer.

All these things will happen in a few seconds. So chances are, you will not be able to react also. Unless you are really skilled. Which means you have skidded numerous times. 🤣

There's a possibility that the driver was suddenly being shocked or surprised by something inside the car causing him or her to get jumpy and lost concentration on steering the car.

People skid because they press brake in a turn and The tyres have no grip.

The best way is to accelerate so the power goes to the wheels and power out of the skid.

Any expert skidders can confirm?

I think it's called, steer into the direction of the skid, (not away, as most people tend to do).

Well, I had that terrible experience. The van on a corner from BKE (city) to KJE breaks traction due to lousy tyre. I steer into the skid, heading towards the concrete wall, slow down, until it catches grip and then steer away. That concrete wall was scary.

Imho, the car skids when the tyres lose traction. In such a situation, lift the accelerator and grip the steering wheel to steer the car out of the skid when the tyres gain traction again. Steer toward the direction of the skid, as mentioned by Kb27.

It is incorrect to suggest lifting the accelerator, when you throttle off or apply brake you will induce forward weight shift which further exacerbates the instability. It takes discipline to maintain throttle so you don't have to juggle both steering wheel and even more loss of traction.

That was how I corrected my skids a few times.

I am also of the view that lifting the throttle does more harm than good in the context of trying to regain traction and a going where you actually want to be heading. But if it worked for you, more power to you. I would question myself tho if i kept skidding here and there.
