Why recycled ocean plastic is (often) a lie

I junk things quite mercilessly if i don't find them useful. But try to be more discriminating when i buy stuff, that's all.

Since i eat at home, i don't mind oil paper wrap. But if eat at work, definitely styrofoam or plastic container is more convenient.

Please use your existing items fully and not just discard them because they look old. The more you buy the more the planet goes faster in the direction of destruction.

I want to use tv and washing machine 20 years but manufacturers are not making the product last.

tv processor use gird ball array shouldering instead of pins like Pc processors. No manufacturer selling warranty beyond 3 years

washjg machine the bearing picha most common. Not motor.

only things can last 15 years is aircon

about time manufacturers are forced to provide warranty for home consumer product for 10 years

price sure go up but quality sure go up

'Right to repair' law in UK

Appliances such as fridges, washing machines and TVs should last longer and be cheaper to run under new rules.

Ministers have confirmed that from the summer consumers will have a right to repair on goods they buy.

They are keeping a promise to implement EU rules aimed at cutting energy and bills – and reducing the need for new materials.

Many consumers have complained that goods don’t last long enough, then can’t be fixed in the home.

Manufacturers will be legally obliged to make spare parts for products available to consumers for the first time – a new legal right for repairs.

The aim of the new rules is to extend the lifespan of products by up to 10 years, and officials estimate that higher energy efficiency standards will save consumers an average of £75 a year on bills over their lifetimes.

'Protecting the environment'

The new rules will be estimated to reduce the 1.5 million tonnes of electrical waste said by the government to be generated in the UK each year and to contribute to reducing carbon emissions overall.

Business and Energy Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng said: "Our plans to tighten product standards will ensure more electrical goods can be fixed rather than thrown on the scrap heap - putting more money back in the pockets of consumers whilst protecting the environment.

'Right to repair' rules brought in for appliances

"Our upcoming energy efficiency framework will push electrical products to use even less energy and material resources, saving people money on their bills and reducing carbon emissions."

The issue has been promoted by the Commons Environmental Audit Committee. Its chairman, Philip Dunne MP told BBC News: “Cracking down on planned obsolescence in electrical items is key to tackling the e-waste tsunami.

“We must stop using and disposing quite so much: we must take action if we are to protect the environment for generations to come.”

The think tank Green Alliance has also pushed for a right to repair. Its spokeswoman Libby Peake told BBC News: “This is good news – but it’s exactly what the government said it would do on leaving the EU.

“The big test is whether the UK will continue to keep track with future EU standards.”

I had my note 4 for nearly 4 years until it was completely  kaput 2.5 years ago before I changed to note 9, about 2.5 years on and I am still using it, I  hope it will last me for another 2.5year at least. The older generation phone used to spoil sooner because of the keypad, these days all the phones are touch screen, there is nothing to spoil except for the electronics.

Reduce

Reuse

Recycle

There's a reason they're in that specific order. The greatest positive environmental impact comes from reducing and goes downward.

Oh, and this:

Also, this:

Not to say that 3R concept is outdated but many organisations has move on to 4 or even 5R in the past few years. A good sign that more are getting environmental conscious.

uHpmC09.jpg

Starting with refusing to use say disposable plastic ware, refuse to buy new item when old one is still usable

Reducing usage, emissions and waste generation, packaging material, such as driving less, etc.

Reuse, this one @Mustank is the sexpert, reusing his old laptop for "farming" business, and also rubber... I mean tyre hor

Repair, again @Mustank, our resident DIY man!

Recycle, actually a lot of people have the wrong ideal about recycling. Technically, it should transforming of waste / unwanted product / by product to other items. One good example would be bio diesel from spent cooking oil, and transforming food waste into fertiliser / feeds for animals.

My current Huawei and Xiaomi are between 2.5 to 4 year old. Should have no problem to use beyond 5 years mark, unlike my previous Samsung, which fail exactly after 2 years, don't change also cannot.

Yes it's more comprehensive but in my opinion, too many items makes it unmemorable. 3 is just nice. Nice and catchy. To refuse is one way of reducing. To repair is one way to reuse. I prefer the 3Rs.
