More of using wrong sizes pipes ....

Looking at the total weight of the top structures the pipes are carrying, at least 12" diameter steel pipes or 10" square steel hollow tube.

At the base, there should be a cement skirting of 2" height by 1" thick surrounding the base to prevent water in contact with the steel pipe so as to prevent corrosion of the base.

My 2 cents worth of commence ... :secret-laugh:

I am wondering about the metal thickness (or thin-ness as it appears), and a lack of concrete on the outside surrounding of the post.

2 scenarios to ponder before we start saying its all design and structure fault.

1. structure simply fell on boy when he was below

2. structure fell on boy who hung onto the structure

there is a difference in liability.

looks likely that this case is scenario 2 ?

I don't see any difference in liability between 1 and 2 unless there is a visible signboard near the structure that warns people to avoid hanging onto and/or not to slam dunk. Otherwise in terms of design, do they reasonably expect people not to slam dunk when they play basketball?

I'm no lawyer but I don't see any fault on the boy for playing basketball (and to me dunking is part of this game), unless he deliberately weakens the 2 poles by using something to cut them.

Based on pic, looks like the legs weren't even buried deep enough. like 10 cm max....

might as well superglue it there next time

Remember last time the outdoor basket ball court, the structure is very strong. Don't know is it concrete or what.. when use hand to smack on the structure, can feel the hardness and the pain in the palm. Don't know whether now still have or not?

It's an accident waiting to happen !!!! No, not accident. Its NEGLIGENCE  !

No point having inspections when structure is doomed to fail from Day 1. Matter of when nia

KNNBCCB !!! A life is lost cos someone somewhere farking bo chup [furious]

Oh ya.. that's what I am referring to the last picture. That basketball court structure is super strong.. not like nowadays use the metal structure like quite weak like that.

In fact it’s good to learn the different types of posts …….. my primary school time it was just a solitary pole with a hoop sticking out ( similar to a fishing pole with cut out net ) just sticking out maybe 1 feet only ) , later on came a big one like a Trojan horse type with wheels which can lock or put a wedge ( sand bags ) between the wheels to prevent it moving …….. don’t see them around this days as back then it freed up the school  assembly area for multi purpose facilities

That one is net ball, lotsa gals played that last time, when one gets hold of the ball, one cannot move and must stop on the spot, either passed the ball or if near enough, can aim for the net and shoot. I hope you are watching the game and not the gals ok? 🙂

From the pic, seems that the legs of bb structure is cast into the concrete? Somehow it came off.

Good old anchor bolts are still better. Easier to inspect also.

Chairman of East Coast Town Council Jessica Tan told ST that the town council is contacting the family to offer support and assistance.

Ms Tan added: “For now, what we know is that the concrete slabs of the basketball court were reconstructed, along with the installation of new hoop structure in April 2020.”

No.2 is like saying if you hang at the edge of the building, and the building collapse, you're liable for it...

@Picnic06-Biante15 Very very sad to see estate management award project to the lowest bid, what kind of managrment thinking or engineer making such a statement, knowing for a fact an engineer does a lot of calculation and problem solving solution like what if,,  what happens . . . it will go a long way to determine such bidding project never have a good ending, be it a small little  notice board structure or any games structure, accidents can happen for any reason/s.

Supervision probably outsourced as well. Gone are the days when HBD managed estates and each HDB property officer knew exactly which blocks had low water pressure, constant lift breakdowns, water tank leakage, social service cases and so on on his/her turf.

Those good property officers don’t work long.

Had a responsible guy as a property officer but he left after 2 years.

wah lao eh, you really quote out of context.

if one chooses to hang onto a structure which is not supposed to be used that way, and something happens, then user has to be some responsibility.

its like choosing to jaywalk the road within say 20m of a designated crossing.

But basketball hoops are meant to be dunk/slam/hung on without breaking.. just like pull up bars, you don't expect pull up bars to drop on you when you hang on it..
