designers and engineers need to balance between functionality, cost, leadtime and many other factors

sure, u can build an ultra wide shelters that cover everyone, but are there enough space?

material cost will shoot up

and 80% of time it's deemed underutilised (when no heavy rain, at night when there's no sun)

wider shelters need stronger beams

also need to install extra/powerful lights cos the wide shelter will block off the street lights at night, and will appear dark and unsafe

see... many considerations one

but for NDP... just spend..... 😁

Better don’t anyhow cut ribbon take picture when launch because later donno what happen :XD:

life really always play tricks

Most of those neighbourhood basketball courts are converted into communal space like amphitheatre etc....

Also less noise complains from residents.

Not sure when this court was constructed....

But sure look flimsy...

I remember all old courts has 4 poles to hold each board. Can squeeze a ball in between.

this court has been there for a very loooong time, I played there back in 1993/94.  Post probably "upgraded"

A quick google search will show that this particular court's post is DISTINCTLY different from many courts in SG.

Then I think those who drew up those guidelines on sheltered walkways did not do a good enough job.
They just drew up what is theoretically adequate (accordingly to their own assumptions) but practically and functionally lacking.

Any type of sheltered walkway will not satisfy u. A tunnel will suit u best.

My time growing up, no pull up bars in estates, closest thing is basketball posts. Always reliable. There would also be the pai kias who would climb to the top and sit and smoke there like on a throne. Such were their strength.

Some contractors might have use low-grade materials. 😕
I think there's no check on that. 😕

Even MRT also used low grade power cables leading to sagging and snapping....

@bsswan

I thought it is a clean break when I first saw this pic

but the edge of the metal is rusted, not a fresh 'wound' from yesterday

Better wait to see how old the frame is, because it looked clean..... Your right with the rust, so we wait ....

It was reported that the courts were renovated in April 2020, including the frame.

Anyway, RIP.

actually i ever heard of any incident near my old house, when i was a boy.

apparently a neighbours child lost a finger cos the finger got caught in something in the rim when he was trying to slam dunk. The finger got pulled cleaned off .

I have no such danger because there was no chance of me touching the rim..

They Gonna dig up the entire foundation like a precious fossil and find who approve the design,  sign off implementation,  accepted the delivery.

Or... keep quiet no blame.

then they will say metal fatigue , how??? as the structures do take quite a beating as I've seen people even kicking the poles " like just for fun"   as its just only 2 points anchored .... now is a design flaw or misadventure ???

Comparing the photo with what I've just seen on TV, I'm not sure the rusty metal is part of the frame, I think it's a guide for only the first surface.

The frame is filled with concrete inside the how, but I don't see any more cement spring the outer surface....... If I'm seeing it correctly.

i dunno about the kids nowadays but i played quite abit of bb in my sec school days. We were considered good if we can touch the net. Only slam dunk when we go back primary school "visiting teachers".

I do not play basketball in secondary school, I played football and already touching the rim and hanging from it in school whenever we played football in the basketball courts. The post of the basketball board is very good as goal posts for football.

Anyway, my ex-secondary school has 4 basketball courts so only two courts were used by guys who played basketball.

I was never able to slam dunk cos need to jump higher than the rim to put the ball in.
