India asks social media firms to remove reference to 'Indian variant' of coronavirus

India's information technology (IT) ministry has written to all social media companies asking them to take down any content that refers to an "Indian variant" of the coronavirus, according to a letter issued on Friday which was seen by Reuters.

The World Health Organization said on May 11 that the coronavirus variant B.1.617, first identified in India last year, was being classified as a variant of global concern.

The Indian government a day later issued a statement saying media reports using the term "Indian Variant" were without any basis, saying the WHO had classified the variant as just B.1.617.

In a letter to social media companies on Friday, the IT ministry asked the companies to "remove all the content" that names or implies "Indian variant" of the coronavirus.

"This is completely FALSE. There is no such variant of Covid-19 scientifically cited as such by the World Health Organisation (WHO). WHO has not associated the term 'Indian Variant' with the B.1.617 variant of the coronavirus in any of its reports," stated the letter, which is not public.

A senior Indian government source told Reuters the notice was issued to send a message "loud and clear" that such mentions of "Indian variant" spread miscommunication and hurt the country's image.

its not their fault that the virus mutated in their country. i dun think any 1 is faulting them on this

but if they know their ppl contacted the virus and still send them out that is very wrong.

spreading the vrius unknowingly and knowing that u got the virus and still travel or try to hide the fact is very different

of course, its even more wrong if u know those ppl got virus and still let them in.

Don't forget there's also the UK, Brazil and South Africa variant, besides the India variant. If Singapore has one, I'm 100% sure internationally it will be known as the 'Singapore variant' of concern as well. But it should be called the India variant, after the country of mutation, not Indian (race).

At the rate the virus is mutating, soon enough there will be too many scientific names for the masses to remember. Then we'll have to put B1617 followed by (India) etc etc etc etc.

Also don't forget when the OG coronavirus first surfaced in Wuhan, it was known as the Wuhan virus since there was no official name. Right after that there's been soooooo many virus mutation. UK itself there's also another Yorkshire one which they're studying isn't it? It's only racist depending on the intent, such as if its coming from Donald Trump.

The 1918 influenza aka the Spanish Flu is still widely known today as the Spanish Flu and it most likely did not even originated from Spain. Hands up anyoneeeee for the Spaniards?

So yes I agree, stop calling it the Indian variant. We should call it the India variant.
