Wait till they open the border big big and remove all quarantine requirement after they move on from "covid zero" to "covid is just a cold" phase. There will be no more daily reporting of covid cases and deaths.

But don't worry, we have a super team of contact tracers and tourists can buy their own test kit from Guardian Pharmacy to test themselves many times. We are very safe although some may suay suay uplorry, especially the 200+k elderly who are not vaccinated, after maskless tourists come into contact with them. If 1 layer of mask is not enough in this endemic, wear 2.

Our country will fail if we shut our door to tourists, social visitors and dependents (actually we did not "shut ourselves" in any phase of CB, but this is to make it sound grander to make people more welcoming of tourists).

I don't think at any stage of the CB did any of the above stop. We still get food (not aware of any massive farms in Singapore that can supply the whole country with food sustainably for more than 1 year), supplies (shipping is not stopped during CB), workers (they still come in en masses plus their wives, kids, fathers, mothers, relatives, girlfriends etc), business (FDI flows fell by 37% to US$58 billion in 2020, but still better than world average of 42% fall) and other travellers (we are receiving leisure tourists, business travellers and social visitors).

See, he was talking nonsense. I can rebut his every point. This "opening up" is a hallucination of his and I'm not really sure what crap he is trying to say.

Unless he is talking about removing quarantine for everyone incoming. Now that will be an eye opener in our new "endemic norm".

Actually it's already 1 yr coming to 6 months already. Time files very fast.. by looking at the world situation.. maybe by 3rd year still have covid-19 around the world. So of coz need to plan for endemic situation. If not when? Wait until 5 yrs?

No, covid is proven to be less deadly than the flu because flu took 640k lives annually while only 33 died due to covid.

I think all this talk about opening up and embracing a "new normal" in his own words is fine, but the caveat is that they have to pull their weight into ensuring at least a few things are done right first, 

1. A robust test / quarantine regime for all foreigners (regardless of STVP, WP,DP etc) with vigilance to developing high risk regions

2. A robust series of SOPs to ensure zero lapses at the immigrations (Changi Airport, Woodlands and Tuas customs)

3. At least 80% of the local population vaccinated 

4. At least some form of capability to manufacture vaccines locally (that's with Pfizer-BioNTech to set up a regional mRNA plant here). But we will only see this be ready from 2023 onwards. 

I think there is a realistic chance that they can get their act together for Items 1-4 (some are already in progress), given enough time but time is a luxury. Pinky always paints an optimistic picture, so it remains to be seen if his team can get Item 1 & 2 done properly or not. So far, the report card is that they screwed up these 2 items for 2021, which are the first line of safeguards.

If these 2 fail,  the medical & contact tracing system has to step up immediately to take up the slack. My concern is that if they continue to screw up, and we're perpetually stuck in the loop of "fine calibrating" 1 & 2, then passing the slack to the medical & contact tracing system once shit hits the fan. Not forgetting the sudden tightening of measures within a few days notice, this is very disruptive for many businesses. This perpetual loop of events should be avoided as much as possible.

Can't quite figure out whether time flew by fast, or simply disappeared. It's mostly a blur.

Let's just say, that if we're still discussing face masks, SafeEntry & border restrictions in 2030, we're TRULY screwed! 😀

Actually, effective COVID antivirals have so far been somewhat disappointing - no real miracle drug has appeared yet. Looks like we need a lot more time + R&D.

The vaccines have stolen most of the spotlight...

Finally approved by WHO and with that, private clinics here can start offering the shots, together with other vaccine flavours, on at-your-own-risk basis.

Good to give people a choice. Actually a subtle push by the govt to get the many PRC pass-holders here vaccinated and paying out of their own pockets.

Maybe we can have Vaccination Holiday Package to Singapore.

Currently, PRC pass-holder cannot travel to China with mRNA vaccine (for those who don't know).
