Chinese navy to help Indonesia salvage sunken submarine

Chinese navy ships have arrived off Bali to help haul up a submarine that sank last month killing 53 crew, the Indonesian navy said on Tuesday (May 4) as it geared up for a deep-sea salvage operation. Two Chinese salvage ships were on standby in waters off Bali, while a third was expected to arrive later Tuesday, the Indonesian navy said, adding that Chinese navy officials in Bali were helping to examine data collected on the submarine.

All three salvage ships can dive up to 4,500m deep.

The experts say when there is diesel sub implosion, the pressure will cause the diesel to ignite, the bodies will be subject to same force as in diesel piston chamber,  so will be shredded and charred. At least the death was quick. So not sure why they want to salvage. I believe most navies let sub wrecks rip on the seabed as final resting place.

Even if they know what went wrong, do you think they willing to spend millions to rectify it? Or buy newer submarines?

Remember, this is Indonesia. Even salvage job also need others help.

No need retire lah. As long as still seaworthy, can use as training ship and keep to shallow waters.

Yap, can still operate, don't waste. Just need to downgrade to PES B, excuse deep water; excuse more than 5km from shore.  😁

it might be religious requirement... need at least some part of the body to lay to rest.

i read before in the isreali army... even if a soldier get blown to tiny tiny pieces by a huge bomb.. they will still try everything to return even a small tiny piece to the family to hold the necessary rituals.

Commentary: Questions arise over Indonesian military’s maintenance programmes after submarine sinking

This discussion over maintenance is relevant where KRI Nanggala, a Cakra-class Type 209 submarine, was launched some 40 years ago after the Indonesians purchased it first-hand from Germany.

Indonesian media outlets have reported that the submarine had missed a scheduled maintenance period in 2020 which has been blamed by some quarters on the COVID-19 pandemic.

While it is still not clear that the missed maintenance cycle is connected to the sinking, the investigation into this event will no doubt be looking at this angle after investigators have said they will examine the impact of age on the submarine.

Sure there is. You often hear divers talk about deep sea currents that is able to push them far out to sea.

Indonesia is made of thousands of islands and if these strong currents are push between the narrow gaps of the islands it can cause a lot of turbulence. It is possible that the sub's power got knock out by it.

Just look at the ocean conveyor belt.

I guess it is one of the many possibilities that they do not wish to rule out.

Like the Finding Nemo movie, they follow the current to Australia.

Just my curiosity,  why it breaks into 3 parts? I thought it would just sink if it lost power.
