smrt taxi to go full electric within 5 yrs

TRANSPORT operator SMRT will bring in its first batch of 300 electric vehicles from July this year, as it aims to replace its entire taxi fleet with electric vehicles within the next five years.

The fleet of electric vehicles to be launched could include various models well suited to meet the demands of the transport market. These could include sedans, station wagons and multi-purpose vehicles, SMRT said in a press statement on Tuesday.

Going electric with taxis is part of SMRT's growth strategy in green businesses under Strides Mobility, its sustainable urban mobility services arm. This strategy includes developing sustainable mobility solutions and introducing mobility services using electric vehicles, including taxis, cars, vans, limousines, motorcycles and buses.

Said Tan Kian Heong, president of SMRT Road Holdings: "In line with Singapore's Green Plan, we are excited to be among the first point-to-point transport operators to commit to the deployment of electric taxis on a large scale. This is a key part of our plan to incorporate principles of sustainability into each of our businesses to bring sustainable urban mobility services to our customers."

Nissan Kicks and e-serena not considered electric i think. Should be considered hybrid, because of the presence of a petrol engine. Probably might be BYD e6 and Kona electric.

Tesla is just too expensive to be used as a taxi, looking at the way taxi drivers drive... Even if it materialize, probably $200-$250 rental per day 🤣

Full electric vehicles for SMRT taxi? Full electric vehicles not cheap at the moment le. Thats why many would go for hybrid first. Will the taxi fare go up or not for full electric taxi?

More importantly, with the changes in working from home , how much can they charge.

charging is always the problem. you can't expect taxi driver to sit there for hours to get his batteries charged, before he can move off and start making money.

if they have a swap and move off battery system, then it will be much more acceptable for them.

that means those cars must be designed with easily  swappable battery.

I'm guessing MG - the MG ZS is currently one of the more affordable EVs and they also have the MG5 EV coming soon. But MG ZS range is only about 250km, may not be enough for taxis
