The probably drink a glass of sake on stage for show. 😅

if they do that it make things worst.

if can drink to prove water is safe, then what for waste and dump into ocean, might as well go water their crops

So those water are heavy water right?

http://www.britannica.com/science/heavy-water

Heavy water (D2O), also called deuterium oxide, water composed of deuterium, the hydrogen isotope with a mass double that of ordinary hydrogen, and oxygen. (Ordinary water has a composition represented by H2O.) Thus, heavy water has a molecular weight of about 20 (the sum of twice the atomic weight of deuterium, which is 2, plus the atomic weight of oxygen, which is 16), whereas ordinary water has a molecular weight of about 18 (twice the atomic weight of ordinary hydrogen, which is 1, plus oxygen, which is 16).

Ordinary water as obtained from most natural sources contains about one deuterium atom for every 6,760 ordinary hydrogen atoms. and the residual water is thus enriched in deuterium content. Continued electrolysis of hundreds of litres of water until only a few millilitres remain yields practically pure deuterium oxide. This operation, until 1943 the only large-scale method used, has been superseded by less expensive processes, such as fractional distillation (D2O becomes concentrated in the liquid residue because it is less volatile than H2O). The heavy water produced is used as a moderator of neutrons in nuclear power plants. In the laboratory heavy water is employed as an isotopic tracer in studies of chemical and biochemical processes.

I know solid waste is buried deep deep.

Let it decay naturally.

In Chernobyl accident,  airborne contamination is basically left to dilute to safe natural levels... but that is no choice one right?

So generally solution seems to be long term storage or dilution.

Clearly one can't do dilution within solids.. and long term storage not only creates a hot spot, it's been debated if "long term" is really how long in a human scale of time.

But with contaminated water.. perhaps it is possible to slow release within safe natural dilution level? Cos what's the viable alternative?

And I may be wrong,  but I kinda suspect it's probably been done before out of the media limelight.

I think what the japs have done is extremely irresponsible! just wanna save monies they dump radioactive water into the ocean...the japs r jeopardizing and seriously damaging the health of the world people who consume from the ocean...the japs r making their domestic issue into an international one! I am of the view that the ocean is a common property of mankind...My family will definitely boycott japanese products and services until they withdraw their decision

Incidentally, countries with nuclear power plant has been dumping treated radioactive water into the ocean for a long time.

That's why there are many nuclear plants near the sea, so that if anything goes wrong, they can dispose into the sea. It's ethically wrong, would be curious to know what are the alternatives.

Quoting the below South China Morning Post article dated March 2021:

      https://sg.news.yahoo.com/china-puts-nuclear-power-front-160647143.html

<quote>

"China has three low- and medium-level disposal sites – in Gansu, Guangdong and Sichuan provinces – but they cannot deal with all the radioactive waste already generated in the country every year."

...

"The Guangdong site meanwhile was supposed to take waste from the Daya Bay plant in the province but had not yet begun operating"

<unquote>

Daya Bay plant is already in operation, and is quite close to Hong Kong.

China never tell you how they are disposing the radioactive waste. Does that means all taken care of, clean and safe? So need to boycott products and services from China?

 Great. Have yet to gather sufficient evidence and you say someone is a thief. Moreover, people talking about this culprit and you try to deviate to another seeking to push the wrong doing to another party.

Question is does Japan have to come out and tell the world that they are going to dispose the treated waste into the ocean?

I think they should, but question is do they have to voluntarily announce to the world?

Like China is a member of WHO, they must report within 24hours when they become aware of major health threats/pandemic breakout in their country right? Did they do that?

Sticking to the topic, can we simply trust Japan or China that the radioactive waste that they are dumping into the sea is treated properly?

If not, then proper monitoring is required. Monitoring not just for Japan but China as well.

We are talking about Japan and you are bringing up China.  Like the Xinjiang thread, the US keeps coming up for discussion.  You are learning fast. Lol

So the conclusion is they are all bad boys, right?

My favorite quote when it comes to political discussion these days.

狗咬人不是新闻,人咬狗才是新闻.

You seem knowledgeable but your subsequent remark make me wonder what have gone through your thinking. 1st statement is correct and that includes Japan who has nuclear plants. So far is there any major objection till they decide to dump? Why keep talking of climate change and sustainability if we are encouraging such behaviour?
