Currently driving an 8 year old Jag diesel, purchased from new. Not sure whether worth it to renew COE. Annual road tax now is about $1800 per year. 50 litres of diesel can travel 850km, quite fuel efficient and handles well. The timing chain was changed a few years ago, so the engine is pretty smooth now. Minimal repairs at the moment, < $1000 per year including servicing. Last repair was a lock actuator ($500) that prevented the door from locking.

Get your trusted mechanic to give the car a detailed inspection maybe 1 or 2 months before end of COE.

1. You get an idea of the overall condition

2. For parts that need replacing, you have time to check the prices. Same for parts that are not necessary to replace immediately, but recommended to change for peace of mind

3. Road tax goes up to 150% of 1.8K you are paying now, i.e. 2.7K from the 15th year onwards. This is one of the big ticket items for big CC COE cars. However if 2.7K per year is not a problem for you then not an issue anymore :D

4. Is your interior falling apart or still in very good condition? Bad thing about "cold" cars is that interior parts can be very hard to find if replacement is needed. Again, if in good condition, another concern eliminated :D

The Jag interior is holding up quite well - the rubber surrounding the round gear selector has broken off so I just plaster it with red duct tape. Some rubber bits around the door has developed a big tear, so I cover it up with masking tape to prevent squeaking noises. I am not particular about aesthetics as long as the car drives well. I usually pay the road tax half-yearly and 2.7K / 2  is pretty OK. I am afraid that the government may impose additional tax above that to discourage diesel renewals. The new cars that I really like are > $250K, which is beyond my means and I don't want to go for bread and butter cars.

Oh yes, don't forget you have to forgo the PARF rebate upon COE renewal. Another point for you to take note.

So if you're satisfied with the Jag's overall condition, then by all means go ahead and renew it. Good luck!

After moving to Punggol then only I appreciate the better fuel consumption 🙂  . Also in Malaysia now the Diesel Euro V is readily available - actually can go KL, drive around and come back without refueling but of course refuel there to save some money 😜

Neutral Newbie

Last time Dealers want to write-off cars need to create fake accidents to claim total lost. Now with EV, so much easier to setoff a fire and claim total lost.

I don't think diesel passenger cars are the main problem. Should stop the registration of diesel lorries, vans and buses and turn them into EVs.

The UK, South America countries, China are all turning electric.

In this aspect, traditional powerhouses like Japan and US are considered backwards in their EV uptake. Very primitive mindset.

Japan has a electricity problem.

That’s why Jap wanted to develop hydrogen economy

Indeed the fuel consumption is good! Actually that was my main consideration to switch to diesel! In the early years I travel a lot for work and if I am not using my wife will be the “taxi” driver for my school going kids…

love driving up to kl, hardly a sweat and every time I pump up makes me smile 😊

300 plus km, per way only uses around $13-$15 dollars ..and this is at current prices, u imagine 8 yrs ago prices..😂

agree current models are beyond my reach..and B&B models will not be sufficient to carry all my barang barang…😂

Actually my interior is ver good… only the exterior, got a few deep dings on the side doors… some people just can’t inflicting dings on other pple cars!!

leather is holding up well and I actually prefer the older leathers than current new car’s leather!
and I cannot accept that flimsy signal stalk feel in the newer beemers… oh man such a big difference from the older model just for the sake of environmental savings!
