Actually it is better than Thailand.  At least more in your face. Thailand pretends to be a democracy but is run by the King and his cronies.

Similar to Malaysia and indonesia.

Not really, Malaysia has its race politics but the Malay swing votes can / will change ruling party, same like in Indonesia. Of course there are gerrymandering, uneven playing field, etc.

In Thailand, the party with the most number of popular votes in the last 10-20 years have never been in the driving seat for very long and may never will.

Like in Myanmar, the generals have screwed up the economy for more than 10 years but they remain in power, supported by vested interest.

Yes but China is not active in regime change activity in Africa.  Why US is so hard on Cuba?

You can buy off dictators but harder to buy popular votes.

US sanctions Myanmar coup leaders as generals warn protesters to return to work

US Treasury Department announced it was blocking any US assets and transactions with 10 current or former military officials held responsible for the Feb 1 coup. In the most significant concrete action, President Joe Biden announced his administration was cutting off the generals' access to US$1 billion in funds in the United States.

Civil disobedience movement if widely supported can cripple the military's effort to get a move on.

This general never prepared well. If really prepared, he can dismiss all these civil servant strikers and send the military to take over the functions, e.g. medical, air traffic ctrl, schools. But i think their military rank and file are poorly educated, so hard to find these specialists.

Question is WTF was the objective of the coup?

They already are the real power.

Only explanation is these generals are basically useless shits that serve no purpose but their own misguided egos.

Myanmar coup: Fear and defiance at night-time arrests

People in Myanmar are reacting with defiance as authorities use night-time raids to arrest opponents of the military coup.

Video footage showed people banging pots and pans to warn their neighbours of approaching security forces.

Mass protests have taken place since the military seized control of the South East Asian country on 1 February.

The army announced on Saturday that arrest warrants had been issued for seven prominent opposition campaigners.

They are wanted under the rarely used charge of "disturbing tranquillity". One of them, Min Ko Naing, was one of the student leaders involved in the failed 1988 uprising against the then-military dictator. He has appeared in a social media video denouncing the use of night-time raids to make arrests.

I hope they continue banging their pots and pans whole night long, for many days and weeks.

The military cannot put a whole nation in jail.

Myanmar experiencing 'near-total internet shutdown'

Monitoring group NetBlocks said the "state-ordered information blackout" had taken Myanmar almost entirely offline. Local media outlets said at least five journalists monitoring the protest had been detained and published pictures of some people wounded in the incident.

I think it is to make space to imprison protesters.

1 stone 2 birds. Free up space for political prisoners, as well as making people worry about crime rather than focusing on protest.

Myanmar troops fire on protesters in signs of feared crackdown

Worries about crime rose after the military government announced on Friday it would free 23,000 prisoners, saying the move was consistent with "establishing a new democratic state with peace, development and discipline".

Telco in Myanmar stops listing outages, citing fears for employees

Norwegian telecom operator Telenor on Monday (Feb 15) said that concerns for its employees' safety had stopped it listing forced Internet outages in Myanmar following the Feb 1 military coup. While the junta has repeatedly forced Internet providers to shut down or restrict access since seizing power, Telenor attempted transparency by listing the ordered outages on its website. But it posted on Sunday that "it is currently not possible for Telenor to disclose the directives we receive from the authorities" in Myanmar, adding that "we deeply regret that the list on this site will no longer be updated". Spokeswoman Hanne Langeland Knudsen told AFP on Monday that "our overall judgement of the situation now means that we can't communicate about the directives," saying that the situation in Myanmar is "confused and unclear" and that "our employees' security has had top priority from the start".

Telenor has been active in Myanmar since 2014 and last year employed 747 people there.

Why the international community is stepping in or pressuring the military? However it did not happen when the same military coup had in Thailand. What is the difference between these two neighbouring countries?

Myanmar protester shot in the head last week has died, brother says

A woman who was shot in the head last week as police tried to disperse protesters in Myanmar's capital died on Friday (Feb 19), her brother said, marking the first death among opponents of the military coup since they began demonstrating two weeks ago.

Mya Thwe Thwe Khine, who had just turned 20, had been on life support since being taken to hospital on Feb 9, after she was hit by what doctors said was a live bullet at a protest in the capital, Naypyidaw.

'Not the right time' for foreign minister to visit Myanmar, says Indonesia

A leaked Myanmar government document earlier cited by Reuters said that Retno Marsudi had planned to fly to Myanmar on Thursday in what would have been the first known visit by a foreign envoy since the Feb 1 coup.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Indonesian foreign ministry spokesman Teuku Faizasyah said that Retno "is open to the option of visiting Naypyidaw to work on a solution at the regional level, in this case ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations)".

"(But) now is not the right time to conduct a visit to Myanmar," the spokesman said.

"Indonesia is committed to make its contribution. Indonesia is also committed to communicate with all parties in Myanmar," he added.
