Hawkerpreneur ... Anyone ?

I would think the wording "Hawkerpreneur" is meant on business management in hawker. One need to know the management of cash flow and business financial T&Cs.

Time has change and would think hawkering is making wave to younger generation. Anyone can manage your preferred business operating hours, day or night.

Just like LKY admitted that SG has lack of entrepreneurship

To encourage entrepreneueship is actually to think of ways to make it easier for people to startup business that will include set up hawkers and of coz cut all the red tape plus of coz rental cost. Doing all these courses to encourage entrepreneurship? Erm... That is not entrepreneueship, that is studying for knowledge. But the thing is for cooking does it really need to go study? Experience, handson, hard work, cooking skills are more important. Maybe say study then get set up stall as boss to hire people? In fact why need? Boss hire people in hawker need study? If that's the case, it is just narrow down the pool of people. So narrow down of pool of people and yet want more people join hawker trade? Its Impossible.

It’s just a fanciful name, simply because hawkers got the UNESCO recognition.

Like me and staff69 posted, Amy Khor kids or any minister kids do it we will have full thrust in it.

In the near future, you will see some YP get interview on TV and he/she will say he’s glad to join this program, blah blah blah...

How to say this.

Being a boss  and being  a hawker is big big different.

I tell the next problem we going to have

It's our wet market stalls.  Without young generations taking over the butchery, vegetables, seafood, poultry stalls, the wet markets will be gone.

Which young gen will work as a butcher, fishmonger or vegetable seller?

So much for being a "knowledge" based economy....the past few decades of nation building turns out to be nothing 😁

Not surprised. Especially as he has other options open, with his educational qualifications, and lots of opportunities in various industries for youngsters now. The temptation to throw in the towel will be great.

Youngsters nowadays want jobs with work-life balance and good pay. Being hawker offers neither at the start.

But when he takes up normal employment, he may find out too late that working under a boss is also not easy!

After so many years of education, I don't want to see YP working as hawkers or Grab. They should get into a career with long term prospects and upwards mobility.

Being a hawker takes more than just passion, profit, and good demand to sustain. Most importantly, he/she must have the resiliency to rough out the long hours of standing and sweating within that uncomfortable small space.  He/She can charge 50% more with lots of crowd, but will not sustain if he/she doesn't have the resiliency for that hardship.

And the biggest problem with our youths today is the lack of grit and resiliency. They are not short of drive, energy, and qualifications. But they are lacking in resiliency.  Hence all the new terms like "quiet quitting" or "lying flat".

Our old hawkers don't much opportunities or qualifications. But they have plenty of grit and resiliency.

That's the main difference.

That's why MOE desperately try to incorporate more elements of "resilience" training in school days but it's an uphill battle as in the first place life is comfortable for most of our youth these days.

No annual leave, no mc, even no 2-day weekend and no WFH, how to tahan? Even I won't accept it when there's better alternative even if earning less than successful hawker.

Last time those old hawkers got no alternative as they have little education or qualifications, so they hang on.
