WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Tuesday (Jan 6) signed an executive order banning transactions with eight Chinese software applications, including Ant Group's Alipay, a senior administration official said, escalating tensions with Beijing before President-elect Joe Biden takes office this month.

The order, first reported by Reuters, tasks the Commerce Department with defining which transactions will be banned under the directive and targets Tencent Holdings's QQ Wallet and WeChat pay as well.

The move is aimed at curbing the threat to Americans posed by Chinese software applications, which have large user bases and access to sensitive data, the official said.

The order released by the White House names "Alipay, CamScanner, QQ Wallet, SHAREit, Tencent QQ, VMate, WeChat Pay, and WPS Office".

A US official noted the order gave the Commerce Department 45 days to act but the department plans to act before Jan 20 when Trump leaves office to identify prohibited transactions.

Any transactions prohibited by the Trump administration are likely to face court challenges as the Commerce Department did when orders barring transactions with WeChat and TikTok were blocked by federal judges.

Another official said the order mirrors earlier Trump actions against Chinese-owned apps WeChat and TikTok seeking to block some transactions that have been blocked by US courts.

US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross said in a statement he supports Trump's "commitment to protecting the privacy and security of Americans from threats posed by the Chinese Communist Party".

All indications are that Biden will not relax the stance against China in a meaningful fashion. So Biden is probably secretly grateful that Trump is doing as much of the dirty work as he can before Biden "regretfully" inherits those policies. 😁

This is good for Biden, he will have more leverage to negotiate with China and to ask for concessions on day 1 of his presidency.

China won't react now knowing they can't nego with Trump as he is leaving office.

From nothing to having a lots of chips to horse trade.

Sorry to say this but after his talk with Elon Musk, I kinda think Jack Ma is an idiot. Certainly the disparity in IQ between the two was starkly apparent.

And if Trump has made anything crystal clear, it's that you don't have to be a genius to become a highly successful businessman. But you do need to be smart to be a pioneer in a technologically intensive field (like Musk is, along with Gates, etc.).

An example

https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/cnainsider/singapore-polytechnic-student-harsh-dalal-million-tech-start-up-13878064?cid=FBcna

Nowadays with Internet of things, AI, to become an entrepreneur has no mimimum age. Maybe can even start as young as age 12. Imagine in future employees working for a employer who is so much younger then them. Like employees are in age 40plus and ceo is like 20 plus.

So think there need to update on the mimimum age to register company. Just look at that article, he mentioned he that time too young to register a company. Maybe now need update to no mimimum age requirements. However if below certain age and want register company, need to perhaps set up appointments with relevant agencies and then see whether to approve or reject him/her to register a company.
