Thinking of picking up cycling as a hobby but prefer foldie as I hate to add racks to my car, deciding between 16 or 20 inch wheels as I doubt I can fit 2x 26" folding bicycles into my trunk. Road bikes are out as Singapore roads are very unfriendly to cyclists.

Are 20" still too small for longer distance ride?

The foldie in my house is 20".  I never used it as I have bigger bikes. But if your constraint is the trunk space, you don't have a choice (that's why I keep my wagon - no need to fold nor detach the wheels, nor lifting onto the rack). PCN, cycling tracks like East Coast should be no issue. How long you can cycle depends more on your legs then the size of the wheels! Just that I find the handling of my foldie less stable because the headset angle is steeper.

Can also change to a comfort saddle too.

PS 2x26inch can provided you fold down the rear seats and detached the wheels. Or maybe keep the wheels in the back seats and the 2 frames in the trunk. Done before but can't remember the exact method.

Of cos with a "lousier" bike, u have to spend more energy to achieve the same distance as compared with a good bike :D

Thanks for sharing.  Any recommendation for light weight 20" foldie?

I am not one to tinker too much (not keen to mod and upgrade) but i have tendency to upgrade, like my car. I know most hardcore cyclists ended up with a few foldies or road bikes (those with storage).

Should I just spend a bit more upfront, buy a top end model, stop the itch and save over the long run? Please share your buying journey. Maybe i should just abandon the idea as this can be an incurable disease with loads of poison.

My foldie is a heavy cheapo bought using Ezybuy for 100 plus . Other bikes (MTB) are old but I refurbished one of them recently and now it rides very smoothly with lighter skinny tyres and some new components. So can't recommend any current model.

With the new lockdown, will refurbish the rest and sourcing components to assemble a new one to pass time.

The gear hub system is amazing. i ruled out Birdy earlier as I was told they are usually very overengineered and hence heavier but this is pretty light at 12kg. Biggest cons is the price tag. Do e really need 14 speed in Sg flat terrain?

The hub itself cost USD1.6k.

You may not need the 1st gear.

Just curious, how many bicycles you have at home?  You seems to be an avid cyclist.

Any thoughts on the Tern Verge X11 and the Dahon Mariner D8?  They seems highly recommended.

Everyone seems to end up with a Brompton. I have tried a 16" foldie and didn't quite like the ride. Am i missing something?

You obviously enjoy the tinkering. Good for you. I wish i have more time for more hobbies.

I also got a brompton n my new road bike is on the way. The crius bike is good all rounder on 20". Get the spec with Shimano sora 9spd minimum. Mine is on Tiagra 2x10spd.

Could be the adjustments for reach and ride height...it makes a great difference when adjusted appropriately

Curious how much you using the brompton and crius nowadays? Think most people would cold storage crius after geting a brompton. Your frank assesment would be most appreciated.

Your ordering of a road bike seems to suggest you are a need for speed kind of cyclist.

I rotate my bikes. When I joining my riding group (mix pcn), I prefer the crius as it can keep up the pace. For leisure riding I prefer brompton as its smoother.

The new road bike is to try out, itchy hand :D

I have 3 foldie and 1 road bike.

Can’t comment on both Tern and Dahon. Haven’t try it yet.

All my foldie are 16”. It is best compromise btw Compact and ride.

What you don’t ride about 16”?

Depends on what road bike you buy, it might feel worse than foldie.
