I started with a 4G router. Then I miscalculated, as I didn't add my tenants usage. 300GB was not going to be enough, maybe 400GB.

So I decided to buy another 5G router (with more bells and whistles, wifi 6) and add another 400GB 5G giga plan, in case the former is not enough.

Since Simba came out with the $5 data plan, I decided to keep both running, and ditch the rest; eight and giga. 😁

so you have 2 x $5 300gb simba data plans?

2 different routers, 1 for your tenant, 1 for yourself?

If it's sim card, then you can just place the router in your tenants room.

Yes, 2 x $5 Simba data only plan SIM.

The 4G router is like a backup now, but I could connect any wifi stuffs or smart devices, to it, like

  • android tvs
  • IP cam
  • a power socket, which I schedule a manual fridge for defrosting by cutting in and out power

Unfortunately, the 5G router had some problem after latest firmware upgrading.

So now, I had the 4G router in the hallway, and the 5G in my bedroom, which is still not stable. 🤥

Eh...which 5G router and the issues?   Planning to get a 5G router.

I could also configure the 5G router internet backup to tether to the 4G router, should the data runs out

Lots of possibilities.

I'm trying to use everything I had previously, so as "not to waste". I also had an extender from previous attempt to boost wifi signal, which I can now also add to the network.

tp-link deco X50-5G. The issue was the new firmware v1.2.0, which included IoT (Internet of Things) support.

It was flaky, crashing every few hours with a giga 5G SIM. But strangely more stable with the Simba running at 4G.

I post to tp-link community support and was surprised, the staff there took it seriously and even give me a beta to try. So it's ongoing, but I think only the next firmware will fix it.

IoT is another tech to learn.

Do not upgrade, as you cannot downgrade after that. I'll let you know if the next firmware fixed it.

Ver 1.1.x was working well for me, until I accept the OTA upgrade. Turn off auto-upgrade as well.

Precisely. Current I got 4 (own stay 2 and tenanted 2 units) all m1 500mbps at $30per month.

A saving of near 1000plus per year, if this sim router do work.

Will order one router to test it out for a start.  😁

KB27 seem to be an expert in this area.

really landlord towkay. salute.

no wonder can have 7 digit t-bill deposit 😆

I guess it depends on your tenant. If the tenant is WFH and professional, maybe demand a fibre connection.

Tenant agreement only stated internet data connection.

Didn't state fiber broadband. 😁

They can do their own upgrade, if there is a need.

For tenants, you'll probably only need 4G or preferably 4G+ router. They just want internet. No one would specify min speed or such.

On the wifi side, you'll need to assess what speed is reasonable, if all of them are using at the same time and what were they doing ? Just internet browsing, some work, or heavy bittorrent downloading ?

If they were doing BT, then 300GB data would certainly not be enough. That's when you need fibre, which is paid for by speed and not by volume of data.

Learned the hard way this afternoon Maxx doesn't do calls when roaming.

My boy left for a 3wk trip a couple of days ago, and there is no way for him to receive/make calls other than via data.

So, M1 seems like a telecom company?

I would never have dreamt in a million years a telecom company can put together a SIM-only package without a calls function.
