LG Chem is in final discussions with Hyundai Motor Group over the launch of an electric vehicle (EV) battery plant in Indonesia after the government there approved of the project, two sources involved in the issue said Monday.

"LG Chem is close to announcing its plan to build the EV battery plant in which Hyundai will have a sizable stake. General terms of have been agreed upon, but some details need to be fine-tuned before an official announcement," a senior industry executive said.

The investment will be "substantial" as Jakarta has guaranteed preferential tax treatment for startups. The Southeast Asian country plans to grant both LG Chem and Hyundai tax exemptions on imported construction materials for at least seven years.

"Both LG Chem and Hyundai Motor also requested preferential customs procedure treatment, which has also been approved," said the executive.

Because the planned investment is "not small," the Korean tech firm has reportedly received other financial incentives such as a "fixed-rate" corporate income tax (CIT) and a possible exemption for a certain period.

The establishment of the joint venture will provide a fresh impetus for Indonesia, which President Moon Jae-in praised as playing a leading role in Cheong Wa Dae's New Southern Policy initiatives, as Hyundai plans to expand output at its manufacturing plants there over the next few years.

"Given Hyundai's agreement to build EV factories in Cikarang, Bekasi and West Java, it's no surprise to see the joint venture with LG Chem as the automaker needs to procure battery cells and packs on a turnkey basis from a reliable supplier. LG also has a pretty strong corporate image in Indonesia, the largest economy in Southeast Asia, and also demand to replace outdated fossil fuel Japanese vehicles is rising. That means Hyundai could successfully fill the void steadily with the help of LG," another source said.

Indonesia is seeking to build an EV ecosystem. In terms of geographic location, the Southeast Asian country is well-positioned for Hyundai to expand its sales channels to Australia and other countries in the region using competitive Indonesian labor, which is also good for the country's economy.

LG Chem, which supplies batteries to almost all major carmakers including Tesla, General Motors and Ford, said it will spin off its EV battery business in December this year. It said the new unit will go public, although the timing of a planned initial public offering has yet to be fixed.

The company said the decision to spin off the battery unit was due to the latter's need to secure massive investments for its expansion plans. LG's global EV battery market share jumped from just under 11 percent last year to more than 25 percent in July this year, putting it ahead of chief rivals CATL of China and Panasonic of Japan.

LG Chem operates manufacturing plants in Korea, Poland and the United States and is building an additional plant in Ohio to supply batteries to GM.

I think it will still be the same, need to  pay ARF, excise, GST and COE. Could the OMV be more attractive as it is made locally?

Bottomline is you can’t beat the system. They will come up with A SMLJ tax just to make it equitable so as not to lose revenue.

I doubt it’s worth the trouble. Pay me to go I might also consider.
The level of automotive diagnostics in Singapore is piss poor. Those good ones run a successful business. Those cmi ones are in ADs or bulls**t their way thru. The ones in the education sector for automotive are probably no different.

I have a friend who take this course recently.  It helps him to improve his automotive knowledge.  He runs a home garage.

How do you know education sector probably no different?

A group of Indonesian state-owned companies are to form a joint venture for the production of electric vehicle batteries, according to a Reuters report.

The new venture will be named Indonesia Battery Holding, and it will consist of state miners Mining Industry Indonesia (Mind ID) and Aneka Tambang (Antam), state ulility firm Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) and state oil company Pertamina, said Mind ID chief executive Orias Petrus Moedak.

“We are preparing a concrete cooperation plan, so that the nickel utilisation project can start immediately to produce batteries,” the CEO said. The company would help build an industry the aims to cover all aspects of battery production, from the production of chemicals and minerals for batteries to the assembly of the battery units themselves, as well as recycling old batteries, said Orias.

This company will also form a partnership with Chinese and Korean firms on two projects valued at US$12 billion (RM49.8 billion), Orias added, without revealing further details, Reuters reported. State miner Antam will also be working on electric vehicle battery-related projects such as high-pressure acid leaching (HPAL) and rotary kiln electric furnace (RKEF) smelter projects, valued between US2-3 billion (RM8.3-12.4 billion).

An earlier Reuters report in June indicated interest from Hyundai and LG Chem for the setting up of an electric vehicle battery manufacturing joint venture in Indonesia, though details and size of the investment were not decided at the time.

In May, a BloombergNEF report found that Indonesia’s industrial electricity prices are about 11% lower than China. Aided by ample nickel, cobalt and manganese depositories, along with low labour costs as well as government subsidies, the country could reduce total battery manufacturing cost by 8% compared to China, thus making it possibly the least costly place in the region for EV battery manufacture, the report added.

The Indonesian ministry of industry said last December that it aims to begin producing electric vehicle batteries by 2022, Autonetmagz reported. The main reason for the timeline given was in order for the country to minimise reliance on other countries for the production of key EV battery components, the director of maritime industries, transport and defense equipment Putu Juli Ardika said at the time.

Wah! Likely to be 100% tax free, plus don’t know what else to attract Hyundai here. The Koreans don’t throw money around that easily.

Free land and free tax.  But I'm sure garment wants some KPIs from Hyundai.

yeah... no matter how many car plants they built, if we can't benefit from it, then make no difference to us.

Erm.. It benefit indirectly.. Not directly in terms on car price since we know that import tax will still be there.

However the benefit could be in terms on say met into car accident.. The parts will readily be available and will not be in the situation where it is out of stock and need to order and wait for shipment. If out of stock, no worries, order directly and is in sg. So the parts will come very fast.. Maybe within the same day..
