So many nonsense post here.

No reason why TS cannot own 4 wheels.

As he has a baby coming he should just get a Maclaren

He can get more than 4 wheels.

He can get 8 wheels.

TS, have you considered switching careers to be a grab driver?

Most Grab drivers earn more than your current salary even after deducting costs and rental, and they have a car of top of that.

But really, just take taxi la. Much cheaper than car if just to bring baby around on weekends, checkups etc. Babies are very expensive... I spent about additional 1k every month per newborn for first 2 years on just basics, and haven't even count infant care and I got no maid.

How sure are you that you can keep your job in the short to medium term, given the current situation and uncertainty? If I were you, I would rent a PHV. Can do part time grab to help cover the car costs.

When the baby comes out or when COVID is gone or when finances become even tighter, I can simply return the car and use public transport. If I continue to do well and when things settle down, sure, I can look at owning a car.

Starts with a 5 - 8 year old small car such as Honda Jazz / Fit, Suzuki Swift, Perodua, Kia Picanto, etc. to have a feel of car ownership experience. Budget aside, how much down-payment are you prepared to make?

I am not belittling you, but a take home pay of $1.6K nett is barely enough to cover vehicle related expenses, which includes but not limited to the following:

  • Monthly installment (~$500)
  • Road tax (~$500 p.a.)
  • Motor insurance (~$1500 p.a.)
  • Petrol bill (~$150 p.m.)
  • Parking charges (~$150 p.m.)
  • ERP charges (~$50 p.m.)
  • Routine preventive maintenance (~$500 p.a.)
  • Adhoc repair and replacement (~$500 p.a.)

The above are just a very high level estimate for your consideration. I would suggest taking grab or taxi for your wife's medical appointment. Save the hard earned salary for your child.

Hi guys. Since u guys on the topic of renting car to do phv, can share more details on this? I know in order to be phv driver, need to go for course n test to get the phv license which cost around $170 correct?

Then for getting the car, we can just rent from any dealer which advertise phv rental? Is there a list of reputable / better rates dealer? I saw some dealers offer promo rate during this period.

If I do not have a phv license, can I still rent a car from these phv cars dealer (not to do grab but just use as my private transport? ). Or I can only rent cars which are not for phv? Is the rental cost more ex than phv rental car?

Ah I see. Ya... times are unstable... Maybe grab driver not a very good idea.  Oops.

Infant care at hdb is around 1.4k before subsidy. You may be able to qualify for gov subsidies based on your household income, which really help a lot. May end up cheaper than nanny or maid.

@Volvobrick I'm at that stage now! :(((

How did this thread turn from budget car into kids. Haha

Which used dealer might u suggest to get it from , been going through the forum seem like is hard to find a trusted one 😞

How much would the maintenance cost and if possible may i know roughly hw much will an insurance cost to owning such a car

Well im bringing a stable income of ard 1.6k after cpf deduct if that helps but yes gotta keep some spare for baby power, diapers etc 😅

Expand

1.6k is hardly enough for u to support a family. Pls don't buy a car, its the worse decision for ur current income and situation

And if u don't have experience driving on the road for long hours n not familiar with the road, better don't drive phv. Any accidents the excess is by the thousands n traffic offence fine just increased
