Toyota Corolla Cross

@Rayleigh I honestly liked the Forester hybrid. It's got a spacious interior and driver's view out tot he road is much better than the Carolla Cross hybrid. The major issue with the Forester is it's outdated boxer engine. Its got several problems:

(1) Poor emissions resulting in no rebate (-$15k) to A2 - even though its a hybrid;

(2) Poor performance with slow acceleration from stand still. Felt like moving a van (MPV) rather than a SUV.

(3) Disappointing FC even with a hybrid.

Surprisingly the Forester hybrid (1,682 kg) is heavier than the RAV 4 hybrid (1,610 kg). Toyota engineers have done some magic with the RAV4 power train area, installing a much bigger engine (2,487cc producing 176bhp and matching it with an 118bhp electric motor) that gives an amazing FC of 21.2 km/L and yet does the century sprint in 8.1s. The plug-in hybrid RAV 4 is even better.

Looks like Subaru has been sitting on it's boxer engine laurels for a long time. Will wait and see if Subaru decides to fix its boxer engine hybrid combination with the help of it's majority owner - Toyota.

Test drove at Leng Kee😂 last evening..

Quite powerful and quiet engine ..

Interior wise very plasticky but headroom was surprisingly good.

Also test drove the harrier and the drive was smoother and surprisingly quick during move off ..

Interior a notch lower than UX 😅

Price diff abt 40k and waiting time abt 3-4 mths..

Trade-in offer was shitty as usual and I told the SE will call her if need further assistance.

Maybe can consider a used Harrier Hybrid 😅

So your verdict on Corolla Cross is can buy or consider? Cannot compared corolls cross with harrier, difference category le. Lol.

@Freeder thought the harrier hybrid got a lot of negative reviews especially for its coupe roofline at the back, and it being way overpriced

Nowadays coupe roofline quite common in many type of cars.

@13177 at one point, the older foresters pre facelift and all were like 100K or 90K

I remember somewhere in 2019, forester indeed is selling around 100k, maybe this is the reason many people buy. My friend also bought one around mid 2019.

@13177 it is now the trend, to look more sporty or for the sake of aerodynamics they say. but still it takes up headroom. but I think the biggest gripe people have with the new Harrier is the price compared to the features and competitors

Seems like RAV4 hybrid not bad? But too bad i dont like the design of the current RAV4. Forester design looks nicer.

I prefer a good headroom than what aerodynamics. Lol. I hate cars with low headroom.

@13177 around that time, when SUVs were the big trend and everyone was jumping on to get one. considered to get 1 too but settled for harrier in the end

Harrier still a SUV, not a bad choice also.

IMHO can consider if need a CUV but not worth the price due to current high COE..

Cross n Harrier are cat B cars but the pride diff is too much @ $40k…

Apple CarPlay still use wire WTF 😂

Agreed with your points. On the consolation, Forester is at neutral band given that it is a 2L NA engine. Certainly at 1.6T, it feels like a tank and acceleration is "leisurely smooth" only as described. Subaru designed philosophy has shifted towards safety and family oriented. Cant deny their zealousness in ensuring safety in every aspect of the car. Toyota reigns in the reliability and fuel efficiency.

Rav4 fuel consumption is very impressive. Saw the video where Rav4 was driven with 1 fuel tank from Sg to South Thailand.

If Toyota makes the Corolla Cross with a 1.5/1.6L engine to compete against the Honda HR-V and Vezel, it would probably give them a run for their money.  😅

1.5L => Yaris Cross

1.8L/2L => Corolla Cross

That has been Toyota Model hierarchy

The Corolla Cross is a fine car for what it designed to be; a compact SUV that is the rage in many markets nowadays. The SE told me that the (only one variant) model that BM is carrying has been specially configured and tuned by Toyota jp for our local market instead of those PI models where they imported wholesale and the configurations are either you take it and live with it, otherwise you leave it kind. He said the head unit is more "localised" and all interface are in user-friendly English. 😃

Some comments made by wifey and daughter for your reference/consideration here though:

1. The headliner is black and made the headroom feels lower than it actually is;

2. The front pax seat has no height adjustment;

3. The centre console armrest is narrow and not wide enough to place a 13"/14" laptop flat or place a wide bottom handbag 😅;

4. The rear seat side bolsters too pronounced and don't cover over the internal plastic covers of wheel wells.🙄

And some pointers from my own point-of view:

1. Boot privacy cover is soft mesh curtain pull-out and latch-on type hence it does not pivot up with the tailgate during opening;

2. Gear selector for driving is only D and B; hence probably no long gear-hold for downhill cruising or driving down slope;

3. Acceleration is not linear; initial travel on accelerator is a second of laggy before the car accelerates briskly.

I don't think the above are major deal breakers, for one usually buy a Toyota mainly for peace of mind and worry-free ownership and smooth driving, and I think this Corolla Cross serves its purpose just fine. What can goes wrongly with it? It's a Corolla Altis ruggedized.

B is for engine braking; precisely for use in downhill situations so you don't fry your brakes.
