The SAF's Army Medical Services (AMS) is supporting the Singapore Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and the Ministry of Health, Singapore (MOH) in providing primary healthcare to foreign workers residing in Westlite Toh Guan Dormitory and S11 Dormitory @ Punggol.

Around 70 AMS personnel were deployed on 7 Apr to support MOH in providing basic health screening and consultation services to the foreign workers.

The appropriate precautionary measures including daily health surveillance, declaration prior to entering the dormitories and donning of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) are taken to ensure the safety of our medical personnel.

More than 150 soldiers from The Singapore Army were activated at short notice to collect and deliver more than 5 million reusable masks to 89 The People's Association community centres and clubs across Singapore from 3 to 5 Apr.

The SAF stands ready to support Singapore and Singaporeans in the fight against the #COVID19 virus.

Over a thousand calls across 12 hours a day, for seven days a week. This is the tempo at the operations room where the SAF has been supporting national-level health monitoring and contact tracing operations against #COVID19.

The health monitoring involves supporting the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority in calling persons on Stay-Home-Notice (SHN) who are unresponsive to compliance checks. Meanwhile, those supporting the Ministry of Health, Singapore in contact tracing have helped to call close contacts of confirmed or suspected cases.

More than 1,500 personnel from MINDEF and the SAF have been involved in whole-of-government operations, including assisting in temperature screening at Singapore Changi Airport, since 28 Jan.

In support of the SAF's contact tracing operations alongside Ministry of Health, Singapore, engineers from DSTA Defence Science and Technology Agency have developed a network analysis tool which shortens the contact tracing process of uncovering possible links between cases and identifying potential clusters!

Through the use of data analytics, the tool maps out a visual network representation of cases, linking them through activities, locations and time. This helps contact tracers to better examine the commonalities and identify linkages between the confirmed cases.

Since its trial in early April, the network analysis tool has helped establish connections between several previously unlinked cases, such as those linked to the Mustafa Centre cluster.

As the number of confirmed or suspected #COVID19 cases has increased, so has the working hours for contact tracers.

The SAF has seven contact tracing centres where SAF personnel support the Ministry of Health, Singapore (MOH) in calling close contacts of confirmed or suspected COVID-19 cases, and based on guidelines by MOH, assesses whether these contacts need to be quarantined.

The operations, coordinated by The Singapore Army's Headquarters 6th Singapore Division, run seven days a week, for 12 hours daily.

Contact tracers like Military Expert 4 Karthikgaeyan s/o Pandyan have been working long hours, more than 12 hours every day.

Despite this, the Naval Warfare System Engineer from the Republic of Singapore Navy feels motivated by how his entire team is giving their all.

“When I first joined I was taken aback because the cases were coming in fast. Some of my more experienced teammates who completed their cases on time chose to stay back and guide the newcomers like me.

“It was heartening to see everyone so committed and coming together at a time like this.”

Full-time National Serviceman 2nd Lieutenant Brandon Goh (left) extended his national service to continue his role in the Epidemiology Data Management team.

His role is to check the information entered into the system for each confirmed or suspected case, so that accurate information can be then fed into data analytics systems for processing of possible links and clusters.

Said the Air Warfare Officer (Air Defence Weapons) from The Republic of Singapore Air Force: “The influx of new cases really shows the urgency for us to process the cases and help solve this situation.

“Although our daily operations are long, it is a meaningful contribution to the nation.”

This family has four siblings fighting Covid-19 on the front lines

yq-sgcovfight-09042020.jpg.4bc4710a0ed1f658d6ea2069fe95bd91.jpg

Siblings (from left) Firdaus, Fazlina, Faiz and Sakinah Surani are out on the front lines every day.

SINGAPORE - While most Singaporeans are working from home these few weeks, four of the five siblings in the Surani family are out on the front lines every day.

Brothers Warrant Officer 1 Firdaus, 37, and Sergeant Faiz, 27, serve in the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). The family's oldest daughter, 36-year-old Fazlina, is a nurse clinician with Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Their youngest sister, Staff Sergeant Sakinah, 29, is a ground response officer with the Singapore Police Force.

Their fifth sibling, a sister, works as a regional branch manager for a food and beverage outlet.

On Friday (April 10), which is Siblings Day, a holiday marked in some parts of the world, the four siblings will head to work to play their part in Singapore's front-line fight against Covid-19.

Encouraged by their parents to pursue careers in public institutions, their daily work has been impacted by the pandemic, to varying degrees.

Faiz, the youngest, is a paramedic with the SCDF whose duties include responding to medical emergencies and providing pre-hospital care to patients.

Although not much has changed since the outbreak, Faiz said he is now required to wear full personal protective equipment for all calls he attends to. He has been with SCDF for four years.

As an operations centre specialist, Firdaus, the oldest, is the first point of contact for members of the public when they call the SCDF emergency hotline, 995. He gets the information needed to determine an appropriate response, which recently has included conducting medical triaging, or prioritising the order of treatment, for suspected Covid-19 patients. He has been with SCDF for 15 years.

As operations centre staff communicate with emergency responders to monitor the situation on the ground, the brothers occasionally cross paths while working.

"It is heart-warming if I get to hear Firdaus' voice at the end of the phone line or on the air," said Faiz.

Firdaus shares his brother's sentiment, adding: "We have to be professional, but it is nice to know that he is there doing his part in the force."

As a police officer, Sakinah is now regularly deployed to Government Quarantine Facilities to maintain order.

Fazlina, who works in the renal unit, has started performing outpatient dialysis procedures for dialysis patients served with home quarantine orders.

The siblings are close knit, and would arrange to meet for meals when their work shifts permitted, said Fazlina.

Before the circuit breaker period,  the whole family would get together monthly for picnics at East Coast Park or meals at their parents' home in Hougang, where Faiz and Sakinah still live. Both Firdaus and Fazlina are married and live with their own families.

Said their father, Mr Surani Kasnan, a 62-year-old welder: "I have always been supportive of my children. With the current situation, I'm proud and happy that they can do their part for Singapore."

SCDF remains committed to support the Whole-of-Government efforts to manage the COVID-19 outbreak in Singapore.

SCDF would like to assure everyone that we will continue to respond to all emergencies during this period of stricter measures to curb the spread of COVID-19. We have business continuity measures in place, to ensure that the provision of emergency services will not be disrupted, while ensuring the safety of the community and our frontline personnel.

We would also like to remind everyone to only call 995 for life-threatening emergencies. This will help to ensure that emergency services reach those who need them the most.
