Otters swim in Redhill condo pool, eat nearly all the fish in pond

source: https://mothership.sg/2021/04/otters-the-crest-condominium/

otters.jpg

After visiting Marina Bay and the Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, it seems like our local otters have ventured into condominiums.

Screenshot-2021-04-07-at-11.52.03.png

On April 6, Facebook user Yvonne Chan posted a video of otters swimming in a condominium pool.

Chan wrote:

"Invasion of otters! They not only swam in our pool but also had a feast in the pond next to it. They ate up all the fish we reared in the pond."

Hnet-image.gif

At least 12 smooth-coated otters are seen frolicking in the pool before they jumped into an adjacent pond in the 42-second video.

The incident happened at The Crest condominium on April 6.

Hnet-image2.gif

A resident from the condominium told CNA that the otters ate 80 to 90 per cent of the fish in the condominium pond.

CNA added that NParks officers arrived at the condominium at 5pm.

According to NParks, members of the public should not touch or chase otters, and instead observe the otters from a distance.

Otters can be provoked by light, especially that from flash photography. Do not feed otters because they have their own food in the environment and their natural eating habits keep the ecosystem healthy.

Otter Family Snoops Around Homes & Plays With Doggos, Causing Mini Chaos In Pasir Panjang

xotter-fam_cover-pic.png.pagespeed.ic.OX

Family Of 18 Otters Visits Pasir Panjang Homes & Has Little Convos With Doggos

After taking a brief hiatus from the spotlight, Singapore’s No.1 furry residents are back for all the attention again.

On Saturday (22 May), a romp of 18 otters paid several homes in Pasir Panjang an unexpected visit.

One of the homeowners took to Facebook to share the early morning surprise that greeted her family.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/179531089457/permalink/10159455242929458/

It seems that the otters did a brief walkabout in the neighbourhood, but not without stopping for a quick chat with the dogs.

Otter family patrols Pasir Panjang neighbourhood

According to the OP, when her family walked out of their house in Pasir Panjang, they saw 18 otters right outside the property.

The extended otter family apparently went through her neighbours’ gardens, turning over plants and swimming in paddling pools.

Just when you think they’ve finished patrolling the neighbourhood, the OP spots them having a quick chit-chat with a neighbour’s 2 doggos.

Getting some suggestions on what’s fun in the area, perhaps.

Netizens amazed by rare sight

Many netizens were amazed by the sight.

One speculates that like many Singaporeans, the otter fam is also going on tours to use up their SingapoRediscovers vouchers.

xotters_rediscover.jpg.pagespeed.ic.gY7y

Not to hurry though, as they have all the time to decide up till 31 Dec.

Another netizen makes a punny joke of the otters hunting for “KOI”, alluding to incidents when otters feasted on koi fishes at a condo in Redhill.

image.png.78c4a6f60c671769ee6870e947afaf08.png

Some also make timely references to the tightened social distancing measures in Phase 2 (Heightened Alert), saying that 18 in a group is clearly outlawed.

Lovely day out in Pasir Panjang

Even though fewer Singaporeans are out and about, it’s comforting to see that at least some animals are having a fun day out.

We hope that the otter family’s exploration of Pasir Panjang was a fruitful one.

And as adorable as they come, the presence of wildlife like otters are best to be enjoyed from afar.

10 Zouk otters wander into NUS building, woman asks if they are lost

collage-11-1.jpg

A human in Singapore walked into a family of otters and the resulting video quintessentially captured how it feels bumping into squeaky, furry mammals for the first time in an urban environment.

Li Hua Tang, who posted the video on Facebook group Nature Society (Singapore), told Mothership that the encounter happened to her niece, at a building in the National University of Singapore (NUS), on June 8.

Family of 10 enters the building, gather at entrance

In the short 24-second video, the otter family, identified as the Zouk family, are seen scampering into a building, one after the other.

ezgif.com-gif-maker.gif

ezgif.com-gif-maker-1-1.gif

In response to meeting the otter family for the first time, the woman is heard asking, "What are you all doing? Omg hao duo orh [Omg so many]."

As the Zouk family paused and congregated near the door, the woman questioned if they were lost, before apologising as she had to rush off to work.

Tang, who posted her niece's video, explained to Mothership that not all otters are typically this adventurous.

The chance encounter simply happened to be with the infamous Zouk family.

Background on the Zouk family

Other than at this NUS building, the Zouk family has been spotted exploring a Pasir Panjang estate, as well as Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park in the past.

According to past articles, otters from the Zouk family are especially adept at navigating through urban spaces, much better it appeared than the other otter families in Singapore.

That's because the family has failed to secure a territory of its own, unlike other otter families, such as the Bishan and Marina otters.

According to NParks, these are some things to take note of, should you chance upon these little creatures:

  • Do not touch, chase or corner them. Observe them from a distance, as getting too close may frighten them.
  • Do not talk loudly and do not use flash photography. Noise and light may scare and provoke the otters.
  • Do not feed them. The otters have their own food in the environment and their natural eating habits keep the ecosystem healthy.

Playful Otters Kacau Resting Croc In Sungei Buloh By ‘Smooching’ Its Tail & Snout

source: https://mustsharenews.com/otters-resting-croc/

Otters Disturb Resting Croc At Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve

Otters have become the unofficial mascot of Singapore, as they’re well-loved for their cuteness and playful antics.

And it turns out they are not only playful but also rather gutsy.

On Saturday (12 Jun) evening, someone shared a video on Facebook showing 2 otters disturbing a resting crocodile at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve.

xcroc-otters.png.pagespeed.ic.89C-aeaiC6

Undeterred by the seemingly annoyed crocodile, they even gave ‘smooches’ to its tail and face.

Otters give ‘smooches’ to resting croc on 12 Jun

On Saturday (12 Jun) at around 5pm, the OP named Fauzy was recording a crocodile he spotted at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve.

That was when an otter came out of the blue and tapped the crocodile on his tail before retreating to the water.

otter-croc.gif.pagespeed.ce.3_Bxu3io_D.g

The otter was soon joined by another friend. And as if they were playing their very own game with the crocodile, the friend also gave a little tap to the crocodile’s tail.

otter-croc-2.gif.pagespeed.ce.OP21fp9uNC

But this time, the crocodile had enough, turning back in an instant to snap at the otters.

Both the otters then went into the waters.

Otters left but came back for 2nd ‘smooch’

However, the crocodile did not get to enjoy his peace for long.

Soon after, the otters swam back to the shore, and they resumed their playfulness.

As the crocodile warily turned to face them, one of the otters approached it and planted little ‘smooches’ on the crocodile’s snout.

otter-croc-3.gif.pagespeed.ce.kwGLR7h2MY

The crocodile was still for a while before jumping slightly at the otter when the latter came in for a 2nd ‘smooch’.

After that, the otter then followed his friend back into the murky waters and swam off.

xotter-coc-4.png.pagespeed.ic.O0P8R08UFf

Speaking to MS News, Fauzy shared that minutes later, the crocodile also took to the waters for a little swim.

xcroc.png.pagespeed.ic.HAljteJql6.webp

Otters are fiercely territorial

While the incident might have seemed like an adorable game for the playful otters, some netizens felt otherwise, saying that the otters might be attacking the crocodile.

xotters-comment-1-e1623560822257.jpg.pag

In fact, otters are known to be fiercely territorial.

According to National Geographic, back in 2018, the family of otters at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve also successfully fought off a crocodile.

They also stated that otters have strength in numbers and often will not shy away from chasing large predators out of their territories.

Although they might seem harmless, otters do have powerful bites and can be aggressive, so it makes more sense for the crocodile to back off.

Watch wildlife creatures from afar

Who knew these adorable little creatures could also be so courageous and fierce?

It must have been quite a sight to witness this in real life.

So the next time you come across otters, do remember not to provoke them and watch them from afar.

Otter Family Cavorts In Holland Rd Condo Pool, Captivates Residents Behind Window

Source: https://mustsharenews.com/otter-holland-condo-pool/

Otter-Family-Cavorts-In-Holland-Rd-Condo

Otter Family Swims Through Condo Pool & Exit Via Open Entrance

Anybody who’s been closely tracking the movements of Singapore’s otters will know that they love condominium pools.

The avid swimmers must think that pools are a cleaner version of the canals they’re typically used to, with better fish.

Recently, they were at it again, at a condo in Holland Road.

This time, they cavorted in full view of ground-floor residents, who were captivated by the full glory of our wildlife.

otters-holland-road-pool-residents-windo

Otters were at condo on 30 Jun

The creatures were recorded in a Facebook video posted by Mr John McAuliffe last Wednesday (30 Jun).

He saw them when he was at a friend’s condo in Holland Road that morning, he said.

There appeared to be about 12-13 of them.

Gazing at wildlife from your window

At the beginning of the video, the otters are fully enjoying themselves. Some are swimming, and others are exploring the poolside.

While most people go to the zoo to see animals behind a glass, the ground-floor residents of the condo didn’t need to do that.

A woman and a child can be seen kneeling in front of the full-length window, gazing at wildlife in motion right in front of their noses.

otters-holland-road-pool.jpg

As the otters start diving into the water, a man comes to the window.

He’s holding what appears to be a phone, and is probably taking a video.

otters-holland-road-pool-2-1.jpg

Otters make their exit

The otters leisurely swim the length of the pool, perhaps oblivious to the attention.

otters-holland-road-pool-1.jpg

The camera follows them as they climb out at the end of the pool.

otters-holland-road-pool-11.jpg

Mr McAuliffe follows, and catches the lot of them running through the driveway past a security guard post.

xotters-holland-road-pool-9.jpg.pagespee

As the otters make their exit from the wide-open gate, 1 amusingly tries to leave via the side gate but fails.

otters-holland-road-pool-4-1.jpg

No matter, as it manages to catch up with its family.

We last see the critters as they’re already down the road, heading off towards their next adventure.

xotters-holland-road-pool-14.jpg.pagespe

Netizens charmed by antics

Netizens were generally charmed by the antics of the cute ones, with one saying that unlike for residents, they don’t have to pay management fees to use the facilities.

xotters-holland-road-pool-8.jpg.pagespee

Another suggested that the otters’ speedy exit was due to the condo not having any fishes to consume.

xotters-holland-road-pool-7.jpg.pagespee

However, 1 netizen who experienced an otter “invasion” at his condo described how it affected the residents.

Afterwards, they couldn’t use the pool for more than 2 weeks as the water had to be cleaned and tested.

otters-holland-road-pool-13.jpg

Perhaps condos that don’t want this to happen will implement measures to prevent otters from entering the next time.

Otters for your entertainment

As most Singaporeans have to stress over school, work and Covid-19, we just have to envy our carefree otters.

If you’re lucky enough to be visited, perhaps you’ll be as entertained as the Holland Road residents from having the iconic creatures at their doorstep.

As for the rest of us, we simply can’t get enough of them. While looking forward to their next appearance, let’s give thanks for the vicarious pleasure of witnessing their hijinks.

My estate was also visited by the otters several times and I wonder if there was really a need to test and treat the water every time they swim the pools. I agree they should have the water tested for the 1st couple of times just to understand if the water was contaminated. But once you know it it is not....then a test will do...no need to treat. I also suggested they keep longkang fish instead of the expensive koi...cos they will either eaten by otters in large numbers or hawks and occasionally monitor lizard, etc. Some ppl just make over reacted. I have come across these otters several times and they are ok if you give them space and leave them alone...just like when you cross path with other wildlife eg cobra, etc.
