Former Singapore chief justice Yong Pung How, 93, dies

SINGAPORE — Yong Pung How, independent Singapore’s second Chief Justice, has died. He was 93.

Yong was known for his reforms that enhanced the efficiency of the Singapore courts and earned a reputation for being tough.

According to the Supreme Court website, Yong was born on 11 April 1926 in Kuala Lumpur. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cambridge University in 1949 and qualified as a barrister-at-law of the Inner Temple in 1951.

Yong was admitted as an advocate and solicitor in the Federation of Malaya in 1952 and in Singapore in 1964. He was a partner at Shook Lin & Bok, his father’s law firm, from 1952 to 1970.

He was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court in 1989 and was ultimately elevated to head the judiciary in 1990 as the Chief Justice of Singapore.

Yong retired in 2006 at the age of 80.

Worked under him as his personal driver & armed escort whilst he was the Chief Justice in 2002.

Very nice and humble man, soft spoken when in civilian but stern & no nonsense when he sits in his bench at High Court 1.

Many good memories working under him whilst listerning to his court sittings.

Always remembered the Chief Justice who cuts down waiting time of court hearing cases from years to only months.... [thumbsup]

Appeal with substance or face double the sentences when appeal rejected. :nosebleed:

No offense but I dont think highly of chief justice. They are chosen by the PM. It's not like an individual can work his way up to that position. He has to kiss some butts to get there. He will likely take the political side of his boss. It's kinda contradicting when he's supposedly the chief justice. Sorry, he's just not somebody I will look up to.

Like our current president, ppl no like this kinda chosen one.

At least during the time when he was the CJ, the sentencing was really deterrent for people who was thinking of committing crime, and also those who tried to appeal, its like show-hand, double or nothing 😅

Chosen and appointed yes.. but he did a good job.

To be harsh on crime is easy. To be soft on crime is also easy. What is not easy is to have balance - is double or nothing balance? When someone appeals, it could be because they are innocent or because they are guilty but the initial sentencing is unjust.

Well said....all the bootlickers praise him to the moon. Is there a need to do so?

True. Its easy to go one or the other way. I dunno how was he on that point but it was also a different era. Public sentiments also different. 

More importantly for someone high up is whether 待人有礼。

All high level appointments are chosen by the PM. who is not?

Some are useless, some are NATO, some are shameless, some are scandalous,  but there are a few who shine out of the lot.

Your boss base your yearly bonus only on the stuff you've done well and ignore the things you screwed up? Let me know which company - i think many will want to apply.
