One reason I heard.  Might not be true.  The govt award a lot of scholarships to regional students because of the potential benefit to singapore.

Some sink roots.  Some contribute.  But there is another factor.

These students are supposedly the elite in their country.  They might return to their home countries.  And they might excel.  And become a national leader.  So we want them to have a friendly attitude towards Singapore.  And that is one of the reasons why we sponsor then.  Cos out of the thousands one might be president.  And we want that person to be friendly to us.

Good bet or bad bet we will only know in the future.

Nolar, the main objective is to improve the Singapore gene pool.

We rarely attracts talent from 北上廣深。These are elites. The most we attract talent from 2nd tier cities like Tianjin.

We can’t compete with USA or Europe for 2nd gen of PRC province official. That’s elite of elite.

Well, we can forget about elitest of elite.

No matter how friendly we are with PRC official, in time of “crisis”, CCP interest is the top priority. Just look at Terrex.

Tianjin alone has a population of 13 million and it attracts a wider talent pool in the vicinity of the city, just take the top 0.1% and you have a student that is probably smarter than most here. Just statistics.

There are many Asean scholars in Singapore.
